Hi everyone !
i am looking to find the strongest most rigid glue for glueing 5 plies of veneer (0.6mm) together and pressing them in a mold .
I’ve tried PVA wood glues but the deck turns out pretty weak !
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
thank you !

Could you specify what you mean by "deck turns out pretty weak". I do exactly what you are wanting to do with 4 plies of veneer to mold acoustic guitar sides using high quality PVA glues with no issues. I have used urea resin glues which are stiffer, but a little tougher to work with. Also I have seen epoxy used but never tried it myself. The PVA glues "specifically formulated" for commercial veneers seem to minimize bleed through.
Hi and thank you for your reply !
I am creating miniature skateboards so I’m referring to the actual skateboard deck!
I glue 5 plies of thin veneer and then press them between two metal parts to take the shape! I just need a glue that will hold to that shape by really stiffing up !
Thank you !
That’s the mold with some veneer inside
What would be the best glue to keep that shape for ever ?
Plastic resin glue would be my first suggestion. It would be water resistant, but not water proof. If that is important to you, I would use epoxy like the boat builders do.
I can find some “cascamite” in Europe .. is it as good ?
Glue by itself will not stiffen-up, epoxy has the highest strength but pva has plenty of holding strength if the wood surfaces are in contact and under pressure. I suspect that the bend radiuses in your mold are too small and the glue in this area is filling the void instead of being under pressure. If it were me and would aim at high quality and techno, I would place between the two outer wood layers a sheet of carbon fiber and use laminating epoxy resin.
Yeah I could try that ! is west system 105 such thing ? 😅 because I have ordered this
Yes, and don’t forget the 3M mask with cartridges if you want to stay in business when you get older.
The glue is plenty stiff, but your wood is not. The veneers are so thin, they lack the strength to hold the shape.
I'd try 2 or three thicker plies.
I’m trying to copy the strength of other decks I have bought and they are made of 5 thin plies .. so there must be a way !
Are you alternating the grain direction on adjacent sheets?
maybe soak and press with paper between them pre-glue to get some of the shape in. Let them dry in the form a bit before drying them out for glueup.
Thread revived by spam for skateboards
On that note, have ya noticed that threads two years and older are locked? Of course not, who would notice that?
I had not noticed!
Attaboy Ben! Good job.
Considering the need, a polyurethane wood glue would serve as the most durable and strongest for sticking together veneers. It’s also versatile to be used with plastic, metal, foam, glass, concrete, ceramic, and stone. And if you are looking for one for veneer especially, look for the one with 3M peel and stick and self-stick adhesive.
Unibond 800. It's made for curved lamination work.

Jowat glue one of industrial adhesives. It's mainly used in woodworking and furniture.
Roarockit sells vac bags and stuff for doing that and have videos on making boards.
+1 on unibond. Get a postage scale and wear a mask when mixing the two parts. It is specifically designed for the bent laminations you are making.
You need a glue that will not creep. Unibond is excellent for that, as is resorcinal, plastic resin glue, hot hide glue and epoxy. I don't know all epoxies since there are so many versions but West System works.. I've heard it said that titebond 3 works for bent lamination and although I use it for many things I don't feel like experimenting. I already know 5 ways to get it done!
