Good morning, I am in the process of putting in new Bamboo floors in a condo. I removed the 1961 particle board subfloor to find 1×6 planks. All is good so far! After closer inspection I noticed signs of cat urine around the edges of the room. I am wonderring if there is anything I can do to eliminte or just seal the smell prior to putting in new 5/8 CDX subfloor? Any ideas are greatly apreaciated!!

Ron,
My wife and I have a paint contracting business in Seattle, WA and the product we use to seal smoke damage is white pigmented shellac. The white color is mainly so you can see where you've put it. "Zinsser" (brand name) also makes a superb line of primers; their "Kilz" product would also be fine for sealing out smells. I would go with the shellac as I believe it would be less expensive.

Mack
Thanks, I am going to try the Kilz since I am using it on some of the walls already. Do I need to cover the entire floor or just the general area?
Ron,
I would coat the floor in that whole room and then put a second coat on the "suspect" area for good measure.
Good luck !

"Natures Miracle" , it is availabe at the larger pet stores like Petsmart . It is a natural enzyme and will kill any odor. The only catch is that since it kills the odor, not cover it up, it must touch or come in contact with whatever is causing the odor. Depending how bad the odor it is it may take a week or so or possibly a second application, but it will work.
There are other brands of the same type of product, but I always thought "Natures Miracle" worked best.

We had the same problem but with dogs. Urine soaked into the bottom sill of the wall. Called the local carpet cleaning company and they sprayed a liquid ??? in the area where the urine was located. Smell gone!
Call your local carpet cleaning company and see what they use.

Ron,
I second the recommendation to use "Nature's Miracle." A couple of years ago DW and I were fixing up a house where the former resident was a real pig--seriously, the owners kept a pot-belly pig that had free run of the kitchen and a "pig door" to the outside. Any way, we didn't really notice any odor until we started pulling up the vinyl tile flooring. Then, the stench was overpowering! Taking someone else's recommendation, we sprayed Nature's Miracle (using a plastic spray bottle) on the subfloor and the odor completely disappeared within a day or two. We've since used it on another house that had lots of cat pee throughout. Pigs or cats, it really does the trick! BTW, NM has no odor of its own, i.e., it doesn't just "mask" the offensive smell.
P.S. Something we learned about pee and wood floors: if you have a pet (or kid) with a pee problem, take care of it immediately. Urine on wood floors tends to stain right through the wood. The stain can't be sanded off. The only fix is to cut out the stains and patch the holes.
