I meant to move this discussion earlier but I’ve been very busy over the past few days. If you don’t have Cafe access and you want to jump back into the discussion, please post a message to this thread to be opted-in to the Cafe folder.

Could you set me up with access to the Cafe?
I would like access as well. Thanks!
I'd like to check out the cafe also please.
Please sign me up for cafe access. Thanks.
Matt,
Is there a way for people to request access without posting in a thread? It can become a bit of a nuisance reading threads where person after person requests access to a forum folder.

Go to the bottom of the message reading frame and you should see "Rate My Interest:" Click on Ignore, then click on Apply. If you don't see "Rate My Interest:", you should see a link that says "Advanced View" Click on that, then proceed as described above. The thread won't disappear from the index frame immediately, but it won't show up the next time you access the site, with two exceptions: 1) Depending on how you enter the site, the thread might appear if it is the most recently updated thread when you enter. 2) If people are still posting to it after 90 days, it will become active again.
Yes I know that I can ignore a thread. I ignore many but never check the box.
My post is in regard to threads that I was following that, like this one, began to have a host of personal requests to moderators.
I was hoping that in the future, instead of asking people to post a public reply to be added to the Cafe, they could email the moderator instead.

This thread, although it has a very similar name, is a different thread, and it was started specifically so people could post personal requests to the moderator. From message number 1, "... please post a message to this thread to be opted-in to the Cafe folder."So I misunderstood why you were annoyed about people posting Cafe requests on this thread.
My Bad! - as my kids say.I am not annoyed about people posting, I was simply making a suggestion that a request like this could be made without using a thread. But I see that this is the vehicle established. The moderator can make one reply to everyone that they have access. So I can see an advantage to Matt.GREG

Matt,
Where is the cafe and how do I get into it?
Greg
All of the above are set up with access. The Cafe will show up as a new folder in the left column.
would like access please
And can somebody tell me what it is? I've seen references to it, and jillions of "please give me access" messages but I still don't have a clue what it is.
The Cafe is devoted to all manner of topics not directly related to woodworking -- mostly political stuff, but other odds and ends as well. It was part of the regular package until about two years ago when a very small group started to protest the mere existence of such a category -- even though no one was "forced" to read any of these threads. The political topics sometimes generated considerable rhetorical heat (akin to the religious debate in the Studley thread), so the moderators decided to push the Cafe behind a "curtain".Now you have to specifically request access, but once you do, the Cafe will regularly appear on the left hand side of your screen -- along with the other general topics (hand tools, etc. etc.). The people who argued so vociferously to get rid of the Cafe complete are, interestingly enough, no long with us.********************************************************

Hi Matt,
Cant find the link to the Cafe. where is it?
Thanks,
Alan
Another request please...
Thanks,
Cliff
Sign me up, please.
Matt,
I'd like access to the Cafe please. Is there some reason why this access needs to be "set-up"? I looked for the "cafe" last week when I heard everyone mentioning it and I couldn't find anything called a "cafe"... now I know why. Perhaps more people would use it if they knew it existed and how to get to it.
Thanks :)
Matt:
Please be sure that I DO NOT have cafe access. I got tavern access over in FHB, and it spoiled my experience.
Joe
You have been here for about a year, and I am always struck with your calm, sensible, and rational approach to whatever issue is at hand. I am therefore more than a little curious why having the various Tavern threads displayed on your monitor has "spoiled" your BT experience.I have always thought of the thread listings here (and at BT) as akin to a newspaper -- one does not need to read stories that you are not interested in, and that should not detract from the value that newspaper holds for you, assuming the preponderance of the paper is worthwhile in one's judgment.********************************************************

Everything you say is true and perfectly reasonable. But it is human nature to get more emotionally involved in arguments than one should, whether in person, or on the internet (and my nature, for sure).
Now the big problem is that the nature of web communication seems to have three unfortunate effects: 1) people tend to be much less restrained in their comments than if they could see or hear the other people in the discussion; 2) the nature of written communication is that it is, literally, black and white with none of the interpersonal nuances that are imparted by tone of voice or body language; 3) no one really knows the others in the discussion, and therefore, comments cannot be weighed againt other factors in a person's life.
In a forum like this, we come from all parts of the world, for a single overriding reason -- love of woodworking. We can enjoy and help one another in that without regard to other factors. But when we start attacking one another's religion or politics, it can detract from the rest of the experience. Unfortunately, in the Tavern, attacks on religion and politics are the mode du jour.
Equally unfortunately, I am too weak-willed not to look if it is in front of me. And, I take my religion and my politics very seriously. So, I'd rather keep the purity, if you will, of my Knots experience which I enjoy very much, and avoid even the possibility of a fight with all of you generous souls who have been kind enough to teach me so much.
Cheers!
Joe
I don't think I want to either. As a fairly new poster I've kept my posts matter of fact and light. Even still, I've been personally attacked a cuppla times. So, I suspect it's pretty confrontational over there.
I try to keep it light and easy, and when someone attacks, I do respond.

It's the 'fact' part that gets you. Everybody seems to have different facts! :)
