Yes there are a number of manufactures that make air powered in-line sanders. They are used mostly in body shops. They require a pretty good compressor.
I think that's what most sanders were before the advent of orbitals -- called "straight line" sanders, as I recall.
I haven't seen one in years, but it's possible that some of the manufacturers still might have some squirrelled away in their catalog. You might send an email to PC, maybe Makita.

The last time I looked I think Sears sold one, but that was several years ago. They are very common in auto repair shops but they are air driven.

What you're describing sounds like the Porter-Cable profile sander.
Waddaya mean it wont fit through the door?
Festool makes them.
Porter Cable makes an inline profile sander. But it seems to be hated by all who own one. Check the posts for it. I've heard of people adding "tadpoles" to pnumatic inline sanders. However I've not been able find any sanders small enough.
