just wanted to thank all you guys that responded to my posts regarding the smelly cabinet, the shellac worked great!! smell is sealed in, shellac rules! the shellac also solved another problem I had posted regarding bleeding. i took a chance and sanded the latex that was being bled from the old stain underneath (thru the primer), I shellacked over the latex , after I sanded it, and the hold out was great , the paint went on over the shellac beautifully, and the bleeding was stopped. I really leaned a valuable lesson regarding finishing thanks all!!!

Good to hear it. For future reference, Zinsser also makes a shellac-based primer (called B-I-N) that's even better than plain shellac when you're going to use latex paint as the top coat. It has the same "seal everything in" advantage as plain shellac, plus it contains white pigment, so that you get a nice, even color in your top coat without any color bleeding through from whatever was underneath.

I should have looked while I shopped ,I probably would have saw that. i was reading about shellac online and was going to put some in my primer but the primer was latex and the shellac has alchohol but i read that shellac is used as a primer and tinted with some kind of titanium concoction, but it worked over my semi-exterior latex, but in the future I will shop better and do more research .

Oof. Don't do that. ;)
There is such a thing as water-based shellac, but it's water plus shellac plus magic chemicals to keep the shellac in suspension. Without the magic chemicals, you just end up with a mess.

I know. it was just a fleeting thought at the time. but nw i know zinsser makes one pigmented so I don't have those thoughts anymore!!
