I haven’t done this before. I want to build a free standing bar. I think I’ll make a
frame of 1X2’s and face with 1/8″ ply which will bend around the curve at one end.
I thought I’d cut strips of 1/8 ” veneer and apply the strips horizontally. The problem:
How do I get the strips glued down to the ply without nailing. I don’t see a means to clamp. I’d actually like to have a space between each strip perhaps painted black as a design feature. Help will be appreciated.
Thanks
Ken

Don't know how sharp of a curve you're talking about, but there are a number of ways to do this.
Before you put your finished top on, hot glue or screw blocks to the structure under the finished top to mount clamps. Get a piece of thin pliable material and cover it with tape to act as a caul. Spread your glue on the veneer, mount it to the edge with a little tape, place your caul on that, and start clamping from the middle. Be sure and dry fit before gluing.
Use a thin coat of regular PVA glue on both surfaces, let dry, then iron it into place using the "cotton" setting on your wife's iron. I havn't tried this, just read about it.
Tom:
I appreciate your imput. However I don't understand. I thought
I would apply the veneer in strips about 6" wide horizontally. I think
your method assumed a solid panel of veneer? When I say veneer I mean
approx. 1/8" thick hardwood produced on my band saw. P.S. I tried the method
of gluing and using an iron and the results were not good.
Thanks again

Dovetail, what is the radius of the curve? That would determine some things.
Haven't got that far in the plan yet. Not sure how to arrive at
the radius, Maybe you can explain,
Thanks
Ken
I guess the radius will be determined on how large a piece you're making. There are many companies that sell curved ply and mdf, just do a search and see what will fit your idea. Or you can lay it out yourself using a trammel or just a string on a nail. Whatever fits for your concept.
Sorry I didn't understand. Didn't know you were gonna do the entire front. I thought you were just doing the edge of the top.
Might want to look into one of those 23MM headless pin nailers. PC has one at about $150. You wouldn't need many pins if your curve radius wasn't too sharp.
Thanks:
I want to avoid holes to fill. I never used a headless. Don't they
still require filling?
Ken
These headless pins are much smaller than the standard 18 ga brads you see. They're used on finish casework where filled holes would be noticeable.
I havn't used one, but plan on getting one. I'd use it instead of clamps or tape for trim. It should give tighter joints and speed up assembly.
Additionally, I'd be careful of contact cement. It can bleed through some veneers.
Thanks: Now that you enlightened me I'll do some research
Ken
Contact cement , you can do the entire piece or in spots where you would normally nail. I would spot glue with contact and yellow glue the rest.
