I’m getting ready to pre-finish some cedar paneling I’ll be installing soon. I’m trying out some samples right now: a Miniwax oil polyurethane and the Sam Maloof finish. I’m finding the Maloof finish to be a bit difficult. I get a real shine on the harder grain. Will that even out with successive coats?
This is for an interior job and I’m hoping to retain the varied colors in the cedar. I’ve seen cedar become more uniform over time but I don’t know what causes that.
I like the feel of an oil finish and I’m trying to avoid the plasticky effect of poly. I’m interested in hearing the suggestions of others.

I applied a third coat of the Maloof recipie and used a 400 grit to wet sand. That really helped to even out the finish on all the grain. Hoping one more application will finish the job. Perhaps if I sanded the earlier applications, I could build up the finish quicker.
This is not a finish that you should be building up on the surface. It will stay pretty soft and gummy. It should be applied, let penetrate and then all excess wiped off.
