Frank,
I take it you are not happy with The Move. I personally think it impolite to mention other related forums while a "guest" in one. I would hate to see you leave but, if you're serious, I could provide some addresses for you privately.
Most magizines that are woodworking related have forums. FWIW, I've participated and lurked about in most of the other forums on the web; they never "measured" up to this one in terms of the "quality" of information.
Like the majority of those who voted in Tim's post, I'm not at all happy with The Move but, the information and the people, for the most part, are the same. While you and I may not always agree, it would be a shame to loose you as a positive and well respected contributor...

It is a legitimate question to post, and in the context of the original message, not slighting FWW by posting information on other forums, many of which are widely known and participated in by members of this forum. After all, the members of any interest-specific forum are going to be the best source of information on the availability of other forums. Nothing in the original post indicated displeasure with this forum, but obviously there may be some additional information under the waterline that you are aware of.
I would also highlight that your response was courteous and did include an offer to provide the information.
Dano,
Well maybe it was bad manners to ask. I have only really gone one other place (BP)and was not really impressed.
Yes, I think there are alot of nice posters here who have helped me a great deal in the past. I see fewer and fewer of them posting.
So I am looking about .
Frank
PS I did not recall us knocking heads in the past.
Well Frank, I have to agree with you. There seems to be far few post than there were in the past. Don't worry about bumpin heads with Dano, thats how you know he respects you.
Its been a week now and as a techy I have to admit, the learning curve on this new forum is pretty steep for the average person. I actually think that it might have been better to start with a less complex more familiar format. I've been around to the other forums and I've seen some better and some really bad ones.
I'm not tied to this forum for any reason and I am an adult who is somewhat capable of making my own decisions. If someone has good info on another forum then I think they should be able to share that information with the folks here. I'm certainly not going to stop buying FWW magazine because I found a better forum somewhere.
I also don't think that Taunton would ever want to be giving people the impression that they would think it to be treason for a member of this forum to suggest a visit to another forum.
Dano, I understand your point and your loyalty but we do have a right to choose and I don't think you or I have the right to suggest that we don't.
That's my story and I'm stickin to it.

Frank,
Firstly, I was expressing my own personal view on posting other forum addresses, that's why I've never done so. Sorry that that wasn't clear...
Frankly, I don't blame you, this new formatt is far too cumbersome for this old dog; I've tried searching the archives to provide links to answer some questions that have been asked before, it doesn't appear to work....Half the time I have no idea who I am "talking" to.
No, we have never "bumped heads" that was not what I was implying.
Steve, where did I suggest that one doesn't have the right to choose? This is not the only forum that I participate in...

Ahhhhh Dano, you do like me.....
Maybe it was just the tone of the note that made me feel like that was the suggestion. My appologies. Steve - in Northern California

Steve,
Where's the sound button? I've got "Paragraph", "Font", "Size", and "Color".....:)

Sound button ? I don't know.... However, I've got some great sound bites that I could post as attachments... LOL.Steve - in Northern California

Steve,
Yeah, you mentioned the "tone" of a previous post of mine, too much base? ;-)
Dano"Form and Function are One" - Frank L. Wright
Not sure, I'm tone deaf. .... Ahhh maybe that's my problem.... LOL

If you go to woodworking.com, they have a pretty good forum there. Overall, the population there is more newbies, but there are a few very knowledgable folks there. Also linked from that site is rec.woodworking. It's probably one of the biggest forums, since it's a newsgroup. If you have a decent ISP, it will be easier to read that one with a newsgroup reader such as Forte Agent.
Another one I pop into from time to time is this one:
http://www.woodcentral.com./newforum/msgset.shtml
There's a lot less traffic there than here, but friendly people. The ads that surround the forum frame are actually useful, well targeted ones.
Lastly, I go here once in a while too.
http://www.wwforum.com/forums.asp
I haven't hung around that one long enough to form an opinion. Their links and information ares top-notch, IMO.
I think that you will find, after checking out the other popular forums, that not many of them will measure up to this one. You'll find that this one IS actually pretty quick and friendly compared to some. IMO, it's good to get away from one forum and see what's going on in the other ones. It's a remarkable change in 'feel'. Take care.

Here's a few!
wwwwoodcentral.com is pretty good and go to http://www.about.com for a great educational type of forum.
Dano,
I love you man, but that quote from FLW makes me nuts. Isn't Falling Waters cantilevered design a big problem? Also I understand it leaks like a sieve.
Frank
Maybe this will spice up this homogonized, purified board. Oops- look out for the violation button.
Frank,
ROFLOL!!!. Yes, "Falling Waters" is a cantilevered design and no it doesn't (or didn't) cause problems. When it was first designed, the "experts" said it couldn't be done, ol' FLW proved them wrong. I haven't heard of it leaking like a sieve but, I understand it has a slight "plumbing" problem....a creek runs through the living space. ;-)
Dano"Form and Function are One" - Frank L. Wright
Frank-
The articles about the poor engineering in Wright's designs are legion. Here's one about Fallingwater: http://www.post-gazette.com/lifestyle/20011208lowry1208fnp3.asp
Here's a quote from that article.
"Exposed for the first time since Fallingwater was completed in 1936 are three of the four main concrete beams that support the living room as it cantilevers over the waterfall.
"They are by now the stuff of legend. Edgar Kaufmann's engineer thought the beams should have more reinforcing steel than Wright's engineers specified. It was Kaufmann's house; he won. Workers doubled the amount of one-inch-square bars in each beam from eight to 16. It wasn't enough. When they removed the wooden formwork supporting the first floor, the terrace sagged 44.5 millimeters -- about 1 3/4 inches."
I believe the definition of architect should include considerations of structural soundness and habitability. Many of Wright's designs were abandoned or otherwise closed by their owners (the Johnson Wax Building, e.g.) because they didn't serve the function the owners had expected (and paid for) and in many cases became unsafe for habitation.
On that count, I consider Wright to be a pretty poor architect.
He was undoubtedly a genius. I consider his genius to be in the field of 3D sculpture. Secondarily, he was a first-rate con man, self-promoter, and manipulator of clients.

As I mentioned in a previouse post, I (like Dano) think it is in poor taste to hype, promote, what ever you want to call it, other sites while Taunton is still fighting the migration problems and doing all that they can to keep us as happy as they can. In ordinary times I don't have much problem with it but for the time being I think it is innappropriate. I know all don't share this feeling and Tim Sams generously voiced in saying he didn't have a problem with it but it just doesn't seem right to me.
Now about Dano...I guess he doesn't respect me because he hasn't flamed me. Dano would you mind making me a little toasty just to boost my self image ;)

Living with mechanical disfunctions seems to have been a risk in commissioning a Wright project. I am not trying to diminish his work by this, and photographs of some of his places really have a moving effect on me. I just do think he didn't fully adhere to a practice of form being dictated by function. Form could win out when there was a conflict..
Here's a good example of one of those leaking roof stories. Since this is supposedely from something in print authored by a party who ought to really have known, I think I can post it here and not be spreading rumours:
In a recollection written some years ago, Johnson Foundation Chairman Samuel C. Johnson, whose dad built the house, recalled a dinner party at Wingspread one stormy night. Sam Johnson, then 13, saw rain dripping down on his father's bald head. An infuriated Herbert ("Hib") Johnson phoned Wright to complain. The architect's now-famous retort: "Well, Hib, why don't you move your chair?" (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Sunday, October 13, 1996)
I really don't see what the problem is in refering people to other forums. I visit 3 different ones every day. This was not the first one I found, so I think it just all evens out. I guess I'm in the minority when I say I like this layout better than the old one.
