I’m designing a rectanguler table with sunburst pattern in a thick 3/16″ veneer planks [sic] on a plywood tortion box frame. I’m worried about stability since the circumference pieces are so much wider. I’ve done smaller solid sun’s that were set in epoxy to a plywood substrate and completely varnished.
Since, all wood surfaces will be coated, will this be enough to prevent the thing from blowing apart?

I've talked this point with students and instructors from the College of the Redwoods program -- the one headed for many years by James Krenov. Krenov is a big proponent of sawn "thick" veneers. The consensus there is that 3/32" is about as thick as you can get away with.
