My favorite shop machine is probably my Supermax 25″ drum sander. However, as my shop becomes more and more crowded, and my available floor space continues to dwindle, I may soon have to change to a drum sander that has a significantly smaller (than 3.5″ X 4.0′)footprint. I’ve read up on various other smaller sanders, but I’d now like to hear some recommendations from all of you that are happy with some of the smaller units. Thanks.

Not sure what your definition of significantly is but I've been very happy with this one.

It would indeed be a tragedy if the history of the human race proved to be nothing more than the story of an ape playing with a box of matches on a petrol dump. ~David Ormsby Gore
About a year ago I purchased the Performax 16/32 and I have many hours use on it. Today I sanded 12 pieces 8" wide by 52" long taking 1/64" off per side. Planed wood to .660 and sanded to .625" Works great. This is typical of what I use it for. With 120grit 1/64" per pass is all it will handle with out excess heat etc. For a one man shop it is really sufficient and is cost effective for my use.
