Hi all
My shop has no water supply. So in the “kitchen area” there will be a wall cupboard of pine and Melmine shelves, ( butt joints with 1 1/2″ # 6 screws) where I plan on placing a standard 5 gal. water jug and using a siphon tube when I need water at the sink.
As well as screwing the 1X3 shelf supports to the stud walls, I plan to “sit” the cupboard on a 1X2 and screw it to the studs with 2 1/2″ # 10s.
Do I need to do anything else to re-inforce the shelf that will hold the 50 lbs. (full) of water?

Wouldn't that depend on the length of the shelf?
There are tools on the web to calculate shelf deflection under load for various species and dimensions of wood. Go to: http://www.woodbin.com/calcs/sagulator.htm

Thanks, Tom
The shelf is 4 ' long, with the jug at one end. However, I found that my shelf for the microwave is wide enough to hold the water as well, and with this shelf at a corner , I can support it along the back and one side, with 1X2s screwed to the studs, and the jug in the corner.
But I am going to bookmark the site you suggested.

Common sense would be to incorporate a couple of strong steel supports under the container, it would be less intrusive and possibly hidden inside the cupboard.
Dear Stewie,
Hey! That's a good idea! Probably why I never thought of it! One thing that I would be concerned about is the connection between the back and the sides of the cupboard. I like the idea of a back up steel bracket.
Best,
John
