I have this barrel top that I’d like to clean up for a project. Wood guy that I got it from said to just use water and a wire brush but I’d like to take better care of it than that. The white specs aren’t actually there; picture anomaly or something. What kind of cleaner would go well with a nylon brush to clean things up here?

TSP. Hardware or paint store.
Don’t use a steel wire brush, it will dig in the soft grain and leave an uneven surface. To remove mildew, diluted bleach scrubbed with a soft nylon brush will work on teak decks, marine hardware stores will usually carry pre-mixed solutions for that purpose.
Thanks Gulfstar I think diluted bleach is what I'll go with.
So how does this TSP differ? I've used it before but it's been a while back.
TSP is a powder you mix with water. It will clean the surface and kill the mold, but in my experience is less likely to alter the color of the wood.
Just cleaning, I'd go with TSP. To bleach, I would use oxalic acid, not household bleach. It will change the color of the wood, rather than just remove the staining.
