I recall a similar question, either here or in knots. Try searching the archives.
Hi Greg,
In my shop the bandsaw is used most often of all the power tools. I make custom furniture and hold woodworking training sessions every thursday. The bandsaw is the greatest for ripping, resawing, tapering cuts and of course, curved cuts. My bandsaw is a General 18 inch and my most frequently used blade is the 1/2 inch 3TPI. I think that you might find a 14 inch saw limiting within a relatively short while, and it is expensive and a real pain in the a.. to upgrade. The shop footprint of these models is almost identical, so space is not the issue.
All the best of luck.
memyself,
I've been amazzed at the utility of the bandsaw. I bought it for all the reasons you stated and it does a great job on all those things. However, everytime I turn around I'm using it to do something else. For instance: the thru-tenon I was forcing into the mortice was a bit to tight and the mortice split. The problem then became how to repair and how do I open up the mortice on the crack so I can glue and clamp. I took a scrap and ran it through the BS on an angle making a wedge....worked like a charm and took about a minute. Perhaps a silly example, but this is the kind of utility you don't anticipate when buying a bandsaw.
