I am drawing up plans for a desk with a 3″ top – 3/4″ writing surface and 3″ band. I would like to hang a shallow drawer from the writing surface and think the best way to accomplish this is to pocket screw and glue 1 x 2 1/4″ on edge to the bottom of the writing surface, on either side of the drawer and side mount the drawer between. Is there a better way to hang a drawer from a table top? I suppose the writing surface will be hardwood plywood, although I would prefer to glue up a solid wood top and surround it with a 1 x 3″ bread board on edge to create the appearance of substance to the top. As I write this, I find myself wondering why I don’t glue up a solid wood top with a traditional bread board edge and hang a drawer from it. If so the question then becomes will pocket screws be strong enough to suspend a drawer and frame? I will appreciate any suggestions.

Hi Rick ,
Sounds like you will have a lip sticking down from the desk top ?
If so then , another way is to rabbet the side supports and use a piece of 1/4" plywood to fasten to the underside of the top . The 1/4" will also keep the opening square .
hope this helps

There are slides made specifically for this purpose, Accuride makes makes one that hangs.

Thankyou. Now that you mention this, I remember seeing this type of slide in Rockler.
Thanks again

Rick ,
The suspended type of top mount slides are often designed for key board slides and other similar applications and also work great. If I remember correctly they were more money then a standard slide .
good luck dusty

Thankyou. Undermount slides are a good idea. I think that I will need to put in a 1 x stretcher to prevent bumping the underside of the drawerwith a knee, while leaning back in a desk chair. Otherwise, the slides will cut down on time necessary to fabricate a frame work for the drawer.
Thanks again
Rick
