I would like to propose a new Discussion heading for Tips and Tricks, where we can submit or request tips, jigs, tricks that we like or need

Great Idea!
Great idea Rick. However, from what I learned a few months ago when we got "CAD Software" added to the Plans folder, the Knots forum has reached it's maximum on folders (software limitation).

Well, they could always combine FWW magazine issues for sale into the Reader Classified section.1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go 4 - get a new board and go back to step 1
They might also consider folding the Colonial Williamsburg folder into one of the exiting folders as it doesn't seem to get much action.-Jazzdogg-

Colonial Williamsburg .. Geeee I a just a boy so no really sure what was going on???
Maybe they can provide an online CAD program so we can diagram our our jigs and tips :-).
Doug,
I second the motion for the online cad. there are free trials available, but Ihaven't tried any.
I think the tips&tricks are being talked about, just not in an organized folder.
But then again, do you want the conversations to always follow a predictable path.
This is kind of like a virtual 'woodworking saloon', we're in between doing and done.
Keep it simple and easy. j
I've also noticed that, while Fine Homebuilding's editors mine the gems from the Breaktime forum and publish them, Fine Woodworking doesn't follow suit - this despite the fact that we lot tend to be more civil and polished in our discourse ; - )
Fancy that!

I'm thinking that the editors would want to be able to mine Knots for methods of work. That's why they'd organize it into a nice neat jigs and tips folder. Saves them time in scouring.
I really don't understand the mindset of the folks that tend store here on this forum. We have a "Colonial Williamsburg" folder, a "Knots Fest" folder, either or both of which get precious little air time. Yet when asked why there's no specific turning forum, there's no answer. Thus far there have been or will have been two Knots Fests. I was fortunate to live near one (Seattle) and attend. In the time I've been participating here at Knots I don't think I've ever seen a post in the Colonial Williamsburg folder.
That's not to say they should be eliminated. But a Tricks & Tips folder would generate a lot more traffic I should think. Plus a turning folder would give those of us who aspire to the revolving art form a more focused place to gather.
I don't buy the limitation aspect of the forum software. I ran a FidoNet BBS for years and I've never heard of such a limitation.

Dennis,
I'm curious to hear Sysop's response to this thread, too!
This seems an apt subject for one of Taunton's infamous polls: What are the areas of interest Knots participants would like to see separated into folders of their own?
Personally, I'd like to see Sysop create a folder (or folders) for questions that are asked repreatedly by newbies who aren't yet familiar with the search funtion, in which they could find myriad threads discussing basic subjects that virtually all beginning woodworkers have questions about.
I'd also like to see a carving folder, but don't know if others would contribute to it any more than the Williamsburg folder - maybe we can re-name the existing folder Lee Grindingerburg ; - )

My guess is that Sysop is pretty busy with whatever this new thing is that's going on, but once it's in place, one of the passionate believers from this thread should take it upon themselves to write to them and urge consideration of the ideas within.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)

YES!
Please, no more 'which table saw', or 'how to cut dovetail' questions.
They need to be answered, of course, but surely there's a better way. Why can't we have a FAQ folder! It would have commercial value, I'd have thought!

Hello All,
First let me say that the best way to get my attention is to post directly to me, (mark_coleman) that way when I log in I will see that I have a post directed at me. Especially at times like this when I am neck deep in New registration stuff...
Anyway, I like the Tips and Tricks folder suggestion; Yes we can reaccess the value of the Colonial Williamsburg folder (and adding folders such as turning and carving); and Yes there are some other topics that can and should be combined.
After the new registration is launched, I will be working with Prospero to address these issues, along with some other forum performance items. The preliminary work I have seen so far looks really promising, but will need to wait until after registration is complete to fully understand the best way to develop this.
In the meantime please feel free to continue this discussion as this is the type of feedback that we need in order to make this "place" this best it can be. Thanks, Mark

Mark,
Another option for those who do not know who the sysop is ( and lets admit that could be someone else if you are on vacation or other assignment) Why not have an ID or an option somewhere/somehow to contact SYSOP - as in email, that could be a group of which you are a member and could get a copy of the mail, or it could be an ID that was notified and you could check messages to on a regular basis
Glad to hear the positive feedback, please let us know when this could happen- we will be waiting eargerly ( I am thinking of starting my tips in a document that when this is ready I can copy and paste from)

Rick,
Good point, The other way to contact would be the [email protected] email address. That is always monitored whether I am here or not. -MarkSYSOP[email protected]Have you updated your forum profile lately? Please Do!
True, but where is the CONTACT US link to even find that? I have been monitoring the forum for 8 months and posting for 3 and have never found any of this info on how to contact you. That was why I posted this message as I did.
Up on the top of the page where you can choose the forum - a Contact SYSOP link, with a link to the sysop for each forum would be useful and readily seen.1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go 4 - get a new board and go back to step 1
Rick,
Working on changing a lot of that stuff right now as we speak, and at the top of the list is an easy and intuative way to get in contact with admin folks here. Look for it in the near future. -MSYSOP[email protected]Have you updated your forum profile lately? Please Do!
I've had plenty of good ideas and sent a few in. Some have even been published.
Mostly I think of it as a way to get a quick $10 to $50 check. But there must be one heck of a backlog at FHB and FWW, because I'm still waiting for responses on stuff I sent in well over a year ago.
So I started looking around to other magazines to send stuff in to. Tried email, but no response either. I would think at least a courtesy response would be nice, "Dear So and So, We received your tip. We will consider it for publication."
If I do get anything, it is sign your rights away (because we may use your tip and or article over and over again in different ways, books, CD's DVD's, etc) and we'll send you a check for x amount.
So that irked me. Consequently, I decided to post my ideas here.
Ahhh... I feel much better being the free giver of such woodworking wisdom. Ahh...skip the middle man and right to the viewing public....Ahhh....
(remove tongue from cheek)
So yes, this forum needs a tip and techniques/methods of work section.
Really, just my 2 cents.
Chills
What a great idea. This would help every wood worker out. I don't care where it's at just as long as it's there (here?). There is a lot of knowledge that we could tap into and I even have some "Tips and Tricks" of my own.
Let's do it.......
Joe
Is it really saw dust or wood dust?
