How does one measure the flatness of a table, as from a table saw, jointer, etc? I’m guessing it must involve a caliper or micrometer somehow. Or do you simply lay down a straightedge and eyeball the light that shines through underneath it?
Not that I’m planning on doing it. I’m just curious.

Machinist straight edge and feeler gauges. Tolerances on different machines vary. PM considers .015" to be within limits on their table saws. The Old Oliver consdered .010" acceptable on the old 16" jointer table. I have a Starrett 4 and 6 foot machinist straight edge for setting up jointers and machines professionally as well as special indicators.
