I’m trying this again my last post got changed to an old post with the same title, how do you know if a title has been used before? OH WELL here it is again with a title I hope is unique. I’ve seen Federal style tables that have a contrasting wood at the bottom few inches of the tapered legs. This seems like a weak end to end joint, I”m thinking of a dowel joint before tapering the leg but the set-up will be tricky and the wood on the side of the dowel very thin. Is there a better and faster joint to use?

That's a veneer, not a joint.
That's a veneer, not a joint. The veneer is only about 1/16th inch thick, and mitered to go around the leg.
