At the request of my daughter I am to build a 30 inch diameter table, 21 inches high for my granddaughter. She will have a couple of 12 inch high stools, 12 inch diameter, to go with the table.
I am using 3/4 inch mdf with a 2 1/2 inch apron underneath. She wants round legs, but doesn’t care what they look like, although simple designs are preferred. She is going to paint the whole thing according to an overall design she has.
Question: How thick should the top of the legs be? Is 2 1/2 inch too big? Don’t want it to be too bulky, but it needs to be substantial as both of these grandchildren are still young. Although they are well behaved in general, they are still small children and I want it to hold up.
Thanks,

2 1/2" wouldn't be out of the bounds of attractiveness, but seem be a bit bulky to me without some kind of taper or ballustrade pattern.
You haven't mentioned how you will secure the legs to the table. It's that attachment method that will determine sturdiness more than the diameter.
To increase the design challenge you might also consider how the table can grow to keep pace with your granddaughter who will be wanting a full size table almost before you know it.
Steve,
Thanks. Before I decided to ask for other opinions, I started experimenting with a 2 1/2 by 2 1/2 by 21 inches long.
And, yes, my plan was to taper it down to something smaller on the bottom. Maybe a ball shape at the bottom.
For installing the legs -- The 4 sides of the apron goes all the way around. The top of the leg will sit in a corner with either bolts or screws so the legs can be changed in the future if needed.
