Do some searches here on opinions. I am a Delta guy for stationary tools, and no nothing about General, but hear it is very good.

Welcome Saw Dust - You've got talent already newbie as you've spotted one fine contractor saw! It'll hold it's own against any in or near it's class. It features one of the best stock fences on the market, one of the best stock miter gauges available, solid cast iron wings, a metal throat plate, a dado insert, metal handwheels, accessory racks to hold the fence and miter gauge, precision pulleys and bearings, and good solid trunnions. I even hear they've improved their notoriously vague manual. The good news is you can get one for about $650.
FWIW FWW seems to agree with me as they recently ranked it first in a test of 9 saws from $550-$900, including Delta, Jet, DeWalt, PM, Grizzly, Woodtek, and Bridgewood.

I'm not a contractor saw advocate, but I saw the General in the show-room this weed-end here in their Atlanta distributor. If I were looking for a contractor saw, I would personally look no further. It's very well built as I crawled over it from stem to stern. Scotty pretty much nailed it on what it is compared to other contractor saws.
The General cabinet saw is a battle-ship also. If they would put a riving knife on it, I would buy one tomorrow.
Good Luck...
