My buddy just bought one and I personally have not used it but I have seen it and the fit and finish is top notch. Something I was most impressed with was the fence. The “Big Eye” fence is exceptionally built and super smooth. I did hear that the dust collection was not great but hey it’s a table saw. I’ll probably get “bombed” by saying this but it’s nicer than a Sawstop for fit and finish. I personally would give it consideration. Very nice saw!
Thanks for the insite!
Would the Harvey pass the "hotdog test?" If not, does it make sense to risk your digits?
I get it about the hotdog test and the saving of fingers, but I have a real difficult time with the monopolistic approach of the company regarding this safeguard. It should be available on all saws. The actual saw fence and internals are not as nice as the Harvey but it saves fingers Great feature. Especially for large shops and cabinet makers that have multiple users. You can’t put a price tag on your extremities but IMO evaluating the actual quality of the Harvey to a SS, unbiasedly I would choice the Harvey. And of course, we all want to keep are fingers.
I don't think Sawstop have behaved as a monopoly.
Like any other inventor they wanted to cash in on the development of their idea. Can't blame them for that. They were willing to licence the tech but others refused to take them up on the offer. For that if nothing else, you should by logic prefer their product.
They have produced an exceptionally good product.
Their rights are enshrined in law and expire after a reasonable time frame - probably in the next couple of years we will be seeing the same tech on other brands.
If we did not have patent protection, there would be little incentive to develop new products and bring them to market.
I've never touched a Harvey, but I do like the quick change riving knife idea and would love to have that on my saw.
Heard great things about the Harvey Ambassador C14, bandsaw. Can’t speak to their tablesaw.
FMG: I have been following the SawStop "trials and tribulations" since about 2002. About that same time, SawStop tried to license the system to the saw manufactures who turned it down. The manufacturers claimed SawStop licensing fee was too high, SawStop claimed what the manufacturers offered was too low. I have never seen what the licensing fees were.
In response to proposed rulemaking regarding table saw safety by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), SawStop committed to dedicate U.S.Patent 9,724,840 to the public upon the rule’s effective date.
