I bought my first table saw ’round Christmas, have been steadily doing projects and having fun, but I picked up Taunton’s “Smart workshop solutions” book – which is great – and noticed that the author speaks of aligning the saw blade with the miter guage slots to within a few thousanths of an inch to make an accurate crosscut sled. I have a vernier caliper, but have no idea how to align the blade. I have a $90 Ryobi.
Thanks.

I have a $90 Ryobi..
I have no idea because I don't have one ( NOTHING wrong with having one ).. BUT... For what it is worth, I think that the Ryobi has a motor and blade drive in one assembly that is mounted to the top.
Do you have any mechanical skills?.. If so.. Scribe the location of the motor housing/assembly (so you can put it back where it was) and loosen the mounting bolts a 'tad' and 'tap' the assembly to align.. I think the housing is probably aluminum or pot-metal so don't 'TAP!' to hard...!!!
Anyway, if the saw is cutting OK (to the fence) leave it alone! The 'sled' runner must be aligned the match the blade position anyway.
Good luck..
Jimbo, what you have is what's usually called a benchtop saw. I don't think the manufacturer plans on the owner adjusting the blade, but I s'pose it might be done, if you can undo bolts that hold the motor/arbor to the top. If you can't figure out how it's assembled, take a look at the owner's manual for the Delta benchtop saw and see if there's a diagram that shows the assembly. I didn't have time to wait for download (3+ MB, I'm on dial-up).
How far off is your blade? Did you measure from the same tooth, front and back? The one BT saw I had was quite well aligned, and it was one of those $99 jobs too.
