I have the Jet 10″ contractors saw (JWTS-10 / 708100) with the stock fence. I’ve noticed that if I’m not careful, the fence can lock into a position that’s not square to the blade. It averages about 1/8″ out over the ~27″ length of the fence.
When cutting thick wood, (8/4 or so) it gets pinched between the rip fence and the splitter, making it difficult to push through and sometimes burning the wood with the blade.
I initially thought this was the splitter, but it seems to be lined up well with the blade, so I checked the fence last night and found how it was out of line.
A few questions:
Anyone know how to properly align the fence? I went through the instructions but didn’t totally understand the process…
What are my options for aftermarket fences? Will they work with my stock rails or do I need to replace more stuff on the saw?
As always, thanks for sharing your expertise and opinions!
Matt

Hi Matt - As far as aftermarket fences go, you'll need to get new rails that'll come with the fence, as most are different.
The Biesemeyer fence is the industry standard. It's an excellent fence, although a bit expensive.
Vega offers an excellent alternative at a lower price.
The Delta T2 is a heck of a bang for the buck at $150. It goes on sale in the $120 range. Lowes recently had a clearance sale on their fences that included the T2, Unifence, and Biese....it's quite possible there will be plenty of used fences on Ebay as a result. Watch the free classifieds on the wwing forums. Amazon also offers some good sale prices.
kummel,
I bought the 40" Beis Home Shop Fence nearly 2 years ago and haven't looked back! Paid just under $300 on sale on Amazon.
It stays square to the blade and I never have to measure a cut, just align the hairline and let 'er rip. I don't rip a lot of large sheet goods but the few times that I have it has worked great.

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
Your fence seems to work by locking against the back, and pulling the Tee into the guide rail, similar to the old Craftsman fences.
If you are not close to true before you lock it in place it will end up skewed. Try pushing the Tee end into the table before you lock it in place, it will be a little more consistent. And, locking and unlocking it a few times will help it centralize.
As others have said; check out ebay, and the adds to see if you can get a Biesemeyer or one of the clones.
Also check the close out page at Biesemeyer, they sometimes have guide rails, and fences with blemishes to the finish, that they sell at good discount. It is kind of hit and miss though on availability.
If you were closer, I have a T2 fence and rails I took off my Delta that we could maybe cut a deal on. But I think the shipping costs would be too much.
thanks so much for the p"ush in, lock, unlock and lock" hint - that does the trick wth the stock fence. I'll keep my eyes open for any exciting deals on new/used fence systems.

That's a very dangerous situation, wow. That fence should lock down nice and straight -- it's certainly a better fence than the one on my old blue Jet, and while that one has its drawbacks, not locking square to the rail isn't one of them. How long have you had the saw?? I'd give Jet technical service a call and see if they can help.
yeah, it's been a bit scary... J&F's idea to push it in and then lock it really makes a difference - a huge difference. I'm going to call Jet to see if there's anything that can be tuned...
Any time you find yourself having to force stock hard through a tablesaw, you've got yourself in a dangerous situation. By the time it fires back and hits you in the hand, gut or face, it'll be way too late to do anything about it. Broken hand, broken face, broken rib...none of them a good thing.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
aw heck, my wife might not mind a broken face if it meant she could pick out a new one for me ;-)
Ohhhh, that's harsh!!!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
