Table Saw Novices – Check this out
If you’re a novice table saw operator, I urge you to take a trip to the newstand and pick up Popular Woodworking’s “Ultimate Guide to Tablesaws.” It covers a huge amount of territory for a 72-page magazine ($4.99) and it’s good stuff!
- Basic anatomy of both contractor and cabinet saws
- Tune-up instructions
- Instructions and pictures illustrating safe cutting techniques for both solid and sheet goods
- “Universal Rip Fence” by Jim Tolpin
- “Multipurpose Saw Sled” by Nick Engler
- Great info on pattern cutting for the table saw — an oft-overlooked area
- An overview of various saws on the market
- “How to” on choosing blades
- Basic info on wiring for 240V
I have two good-sized table saw books, but this little magazine will hold its own on the bookshelf next to them!

Got it the other day and I have the wood put together for the universal rip fence. I ordered the parts I didn't have, Incra T-track and the slick plastic, and as soon as they come in I will finish it. It was easy to adopt to the size fence on my table.
Since my router mounts on the table, I will build an add on fence for it. I designed it and ordered enough parts to complete it also. The fence has a lot of adoptions that can be made for it.
I think next time I am at B&N, Toplin's book will be in the bag on the way out of the store. I'm learning slowly! :)

Got it today. Very very helpful.
Many thanks.
Thanks for the info. This site is great. Everything I am considering is usually in a recent topic and you guys don't seem to mind answering the occasional repeat question. Thank you all!
