I have been hired to build two small tables to serve as “leaves” to a bigger table. Because the table is large and heavy the owners want to build two tables, one for either end 4′ wide by 2′ deep. The large table is 4′ wide, they want to extend either end 2′. I’m trying to figure out how to support the two tables with legs that would fold up for easy storage when not in use. Any ideas?

Depending on the size and stability of the "main" table I would consider going with a cantilever system.
Provide a way to hook the inboard end of the extension to the underside of the main table and then provide one (or two) diagonal braces down to the legs of the main table.
With this setup you wouldn't have to worry about (a) an uneven joint between the main table and the extension and (b) legs supported on an uneven floor or carpet.
