Why don’t tablesaw manufacturers design their tablesaws with rectangular inserts? That would help simplify making inserts for zero clearance needs.

rectangular inserts
Rectangular inserts would be problematic - too easy for the square edge to catch material, miter gauge, etc. with only slight errors in elevation adjustment.
Making inserts is easy, using the original metal insert as a pattern attached to the (rough-cut) dupe with double-sided tape and a pattern bit in your router.
I agree as this is th best method.
while you are at it add a wooden splitter too
