Just was working in the shop tonite when my tablesaw decided not to turn on. The motor growls and the blade moves backward just a tad when I try to turn the saw on. The motor does move and I was able to get the saw to crank up again, then it started the same no start growl only problem. Does this sound like a capacator going bad to you ? What is the test to check this possible problem. Thanks in advance for your answers.

It sounds like it could be the cap. Looking at the cap should confirm...it'll look blackened, could be ooze, or look exploded if it's bad. It could also be that the centrifugal switch is stuck. If you can get to it, a WD-40 and a screw driver can solve that.

I don't know of a test you can perform to determine what it is, but if you take a look at your capacitor you can usually tell if it's gone bad, just as stated in the previous post.Out of all my machinery over the last 25 years or so I've only had to replace two. One in my table saw and one in my wide belt sander. They are made pretty hardy so they don't often go bad unless your putting your motor thru a lot of stress.

Well, if you're VERY CAREFUL, you can hold a piece of scrap on the blade, turn the power on, and give the blade a quick push in the right directon. If you can give it a good, hard 'flip' and the capacitor is bad, it should run normally.
I stress very carefully, and watch your fingers.
