There has got to be a better way to remove 1/4 crown staples after you rip up the underlayment than a pair of side-cutter pliers ! Looking for suggestions.

Yes there is.
Get a good pair of needlenosed pliers. Make sure the hatching goes all the way to the tip. Pull. I have also noticed that a slot headed screwdriver moved left to right (with slot in staple) will allow the staple to come out with less chance of breakage than if you just pry.
Cheers

Helluva job, isn't it?
Worst: Right angle grinder. A snow storm of noxious dust and filth.
Good: Long shank flat blade screwdriver of similar width (to staple crown). Push under, pry up. Have some Advil handy.
Better: Adjustable pliers - biggest is best. Clamp down, pry back over the pliers head. Leverage pulls the staples right out.
Don't forget to sand or grind away the sub floor damage. Enjoy...

Hammer them flat. Cover them with underlayment or flooring.
dpr, Grind a long cold chisel's point flat and square
to span the staple (And a bit wider)
Punch them in below the surface then clean and patch all dents. Steinmetz
Jamie & Steinmetz have it right. Why pull them if you're just going to cover over them? - lol

If you hafta pull them, this little job from HF is the ticket: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=46787
Not only is it unusually well-made by HF standards, it's a very effective design. Provides a lot of leverage, and the jaws grip the staple, so you don't pull out just one leg, which is usually what happens if you use a screwdriver.
That Staple puller looks like just what I need . THANKS !
