Does anyone know any articles/books/web sites that talk about tansu construction in the kind of detail that would “lead one along” to understanding how to build one? I’m familiar with the standard books on the subject. I’m not necessarily thinking of detailed plans for how to build a traditional tansu – though that would be nice – but even some information about building tansu look-alikes with traditional “Western” joinery. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

If your not concerned with the traditional joinery, then it doesn't matter does it?
Find a picture, pick your proportions and use standard mortise and tenons.

I've looked through several books on the subject of Tansu furniture at Hida Tool Company in Berkeley. You should give them a call. Website is http://www.hidatool.com/index.html
I've attached a piece I worked on that attempted to simulate Tansu. The unique thing shown in the book case on the right is the box like joints (no dovetails). These are fastened with special wooden pegs.
