I know absolutely nothing about tap and dies. But I know enough to know that it a small set would be useful to my workshop — for making jigs, tools, etc. Can you recommend a good quality small set? I figure I’ll invest in a small set with a few different sizes that I should cover most of my jig and tool making needs. Then if I have a need for a specific size not included in the set I can purchase it separately. Thanks.

Hi Houston,
Craftsman (Sears) makes a decent set of tap and dies. I have a standard and metric set (1 of each not a combo kit)that is about 20 years old. These were previously used in my Dad's power equipment shop. Craftsman quality like every other manufacturer isn;t what it used to be but there is a Sears in ever Mall in America and they come with a life time warranty.
As for sizes, for typical threading application you'll most likely be using 1/4-20, 5/16-18 both of which are part of any standard set. They last time I looked, a good set was running about $79.99. This should keep you busy for all your basic needs. And as you say, if you need a specific size you buy it for that project.
Hope this helps.

For jig making, and most repairs, all you will probably need are taps. I find a rarely need to use dies because it is easy to find a bolt or threaded rod for the male threaded part.
Dies are also more expensive than taps, so you will be saving a hundred dollars, or more, if you don't buy a set with both taps and dies in it.
Taps do, however, need specially sized drills, not the more common factions of an inch size bits that are readily available.
So my recommendation would be to purchase what is called a tap and drill set that contains both the taps and the proper sized drill bits in one case. Sears does not carry these but they are available through several machinist's supply catalogs.
MSC is a company that I regularly order from and they have two sets that I would suggest, identical except for where they are made.
Both sets are 18 piece, with nine taps size #6 through 1/2" and their matching drills. The imported set is part number 04489902 and costs around $40.00. The USA made set is part number 74489907 and costs around $60.00. The imported set will probably be as well made as the USA one, but the case may not be as well made.
You will also need a pair of tap wrenches to turn the taps. You will need two wrenches to cover all of the sizes in the set I recommended. A nice set of wrenches is MSC part number 06990121, made by General, for around $30.00.
