Before I could get any Watco oil finish on my maple game box, I was faced with a move to another state. Consequently, I taped the lid to the bottom with blue painter’s tape for the move. After the move when I started finishing, I used alcohol to remove the adhesive residue that was left after removing the tape. I then sanded lightly with 240 grit. After applying a couple of coats of Watco Danish Oil (Natural), I now can see stripes (when I look at a low angle) where the tape was!!! Now what do I do? What went wrong?

You applied the oil over some tape residue. Or, are you seeing a color change. Perhaps the maple shifted color due to light exposure and was protected where the tape was. I always have found naptha the solvent of choice to remove masking tape adhesive.
What I am seeing is a "flatness" in the finish. I could not feel any residue prior to finishing nor could I see any so I thought it was gone. Thanks for the tip about naptha. I guess I'll have to sand down to bare wood again. I don't understand why the last sanding didn't remove the residue. Thanks.
Is it possible that the adhesive flowed into the grain of the wood?
That's what I am thinking as it was there for several months before I could get to it again.
Steve, Thanks but the tape was applied to the bare wood before I applied finish so it is under a 2 coats of Danish Oil. Thanks for the info in any case.
