Hi folks!
I’m usually designing and building decks, and not too up on furniture making and design, so I have a question ..
How would you go about making these tapered legs that have the square piece remaining on the bottom? If I use my taper jig and table saw, the taper will continue all the way down.
Maybe a taper jig and band saw, start at the top of the leg, and stop the cut where the square section starts and finish it off (the square section)with my stacked dado on the radial arm??

It looks like these legs are tapered first all the way down and the square part is smaller than (or equal to ) the end of the taper.
Taper the legs on the table saw and cut the square with a tenoning jig set on an angle, with the table saw.

Oh, you're right Citro, those do look to be squared up after tapering.good call!http://www.woodsshop.com
It will be a lot less fussy to first cut the squares on the bottom while the leg blank is square. (Also do the mortices for the rails before tapering.) Then taper and you are done.
Why not make a simple template, mark the legs and cut it all with the band saw? Finish with a little hand planning.
I agree. I do all my tapering and shaping of curved legs with the bandsaw. Leave 1/16th of an inch, and hand plane to the line. Ready for finish, and it is often faster when you add in the time to make the jigs.

Leg tapering? The headless woodworker has a good idea (see picture). Take a hatchet to it and clean up with a plane! Might actually be safer than some finger eatin machines.
