Hi Gary,
I would like to make some small legs for a decorative box. The final dimension of each leg would be roughly 1.25 x 1.25 x 3″ and I’d like to make a taper on each side from top to bottom (the 3″ side).
Can you reccomend a method for cutting these in a fashion that will leave all 10 of my fingers in place?
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,
Make up a holder out of 1/4" MDF to cut your leg tapers on the band saw. I lay out the final shape of the leg on the MDF and then cut that shape out carefully on the band saw. I glue that piece to another piece of 1/4" MDF. This second piece acts as the base for the tapering jig. Your leg will rest on this and be angled properly by the first. Use a 6 tpi blade if you want to minimize clean up, but it should only take a pass or two with a hand plane to clean these legs up. Gary
