I was interested in purchasing some items from the above vendor for first time. I noticed they have a bit of a peculiar return policy which is unlike most of the online dealers I use. It goes as follows… “You may return most new, unopened items within 30 days of purchase for a full refund. Items must be returned in their original, new, unopened packaging. If the return is a result of our error, we will cover the return shipping cost. If the return is a result of buyer error, the buyer is responsible for return shipping costs.” Seems vague and ripe for potential problems…and “unopened items”?! At any rate it was a bit of a warning flag and would be interested in any comments by those having used or having had to return products to this co.

My son has bought several things from them and is a fan of their parallel clamps. I have also bought some of their sharpening materials through Amazon so if you have doubts see if what you want is available through Amazon.
I've bought things from them, but not their housebrand. I'd recommend them.
I know folks that overbuy from Amazon, intending to return a lot of it. Amazon can afford that because they are so big. But Taylor's policy is more in line with what it ought to be. If they screw up, they'll make it right. If you screw up, or even just change your mind, they need to be able to turn around and sell the item, not just eat the expense the way Amazon can.
I've had good luck with them. Fast, efficient, delivered as advertised. Bought directly from them, not Amazon.
I know nothing of them but as a small mail order business I totally get their return policy. They have to be able to resell returned items. I assume they are to small to eat that loss and trying to sell it as used or open box takes time and costs money. As a small business I think it is spot on.
I don't see anything about defective items. Maybe you didn't quote that but they should replace defective items. They can get reimbursed but even that costs them money to do. But it is the right thing to do.
I was concerned about defective items which wasn't ever mentioned in their policy...that was one of my concerns
I've bought from them twice, including one of their own fabricated items. All went well.
Taylor Toolworks are totally legit. He puts a lot of thought into what he stocks. For example, here's the research he did on sanding discs: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0091/2169/3747/files/Sanding_Review_Complete_PDF.pdf?v=1590608214
Now I know who they are! Have heard and read about this test from someone else. Thanks for the link.
I’ve had nothing but good experiences with them.
Can anyone comment on the quality of their hand planes?
That’s Taytools, right.
Call and ask them about it, I agree it sounds strange. How you gonna know it’s defective without opening the box?
Have email to them and waiting on answer. Yes it is a strangely worded policy - and technically one could be held to it.
I think you will find that a defective product falls under "their mistake" and would be returnable free of charge.
Or it would be down to the manufacturer warranty
This would be standard practice in New Zealand and Australia - you bought it, it's yours. Your problem to pay for returns. No-one here would expect anything more.
I would if I received a defective item. I'd expect a lot more.
I've never had an issue with Taylor Toolworks of any of their taytools products. So I can't say anything about their customer service, but I can say I have received quality stuff at really good prices.
I shop their cosmetic defect section occasionally.
I bought one of their #4 smoothing planes years ago from Amazon and the quality of it was pretty bad. This was when I was first getting into woodworking and working with hand tools and looking back I wish I had returned it because it’s pretty much unusable. The sole was as far from flat as I’ve ever seen, the chip breaker doesn’t even come close to resting flat against the iron, the iron itself wasn’t too bad actually but the rest of the components are pretty rough too. The thrust wheel is half decent but tends to stick in spots and I have to use a lot of forced to spin it and the lateral adjuster is literally useless, if I push it as far to one side as I can and keep pushing until I have to worry about bending it I’ll get some slight movement in the iron but that’s it. I looked back at some of the reviews and they all are pretty much saying for the money it’s not bad if you can tune it up so maybe mine was just a dud but I personally would have a very hard time buying planes or similar items from them again.
Yes, we are legit. To get a full refund we require items to be returned in new and unused condition and with packaging has not been destroyed. We need this so we can sell returned items in new condition. You would not believe how many times customers try to return items that are highly used or completely destroyed or where the packaging has been severely damaged or missing all together. If a product is defective or not as advertised, we accept returns no problem and pay return shipping.
This post was from a year ago. Note though the issue is the wording which is quite strange and atypical. “You may return most new, unopened items within 30 days of purchase for a full refund. Items must be returned in their original, new, unopened packaging." First of all, "most"? It would be good to know the exceptions on the front end like most businesses spell out very clearly, Second, "unopened" packages?! What if you "open" it and find it is defective? For hundreds and hundreds of products...how would you know unless you "opened" the package? Then according to your wording you couldn't return it because you "opened" the package? You might consider changing this so it is a bit clearer and standardized.
I’ve made several purchases from them, with absolutely no complaints whatsoever. My purchases include a cutting gauge (theirs, excellent), a 4-inch PEC square (also excellent), a couple dividers (yep, excellent), and at least a couple other items I can’t recall right now.
Each and every item was swiftly shipped, well packaged, as advertised, and now has a spot in my tool chest or shop.
I bought a couple of their bench holding clamps on Amazon recently. They're excellent and inexpensive ($26 each). I would recommend them highly.
