Is 1/4” template safer to use? I know 1/2” or even 3/8 is OK, but is 1/4”?

For drawing even cardboard is fine, in a router table with a bearing-guided bit 1/4" is fine. If router is handheld I like a thicker template to allow for accidental lifting, cord snags, etc.
Why won’t Fine Woodworking remember my account number? Frustrating to have to log in every time.
Thank You for your info…I forgot to mention I was referring to use in a router table. Just wasn’t sure if it was safe..don’t want to learn from experience!
It is plenty safe, particularly on a router table. It is also easier to fair or sand irregularities/kerfs etc. after band sawing. Just use something with a good core like Baltic Birch.
That's a great point there - the narrow bearings on cheap or small guided bits can apply a lot of pressure, and the core plies of cheap construction ply are often soft and wide enough for a bearing to slip in. You need plies that are well-bonded and thin.
I use 1/4" MDF.
It depends, as always...
There is nothing wrong with 1/4"MDF as a template material, but there are issues - it is quite flexible, so if parts absolutely have to match up perfectly, it's worth bearing this in mind. If a mm here or there is unimportant (say routing a table leg profile) then you'll be fine. If you are trying to nest long complimentary curves then you need thicker material, and preferably a template that is plenty wide enough to provide support, as even a tiny wiggle will spoil the effect. Don't ask me how I know this. It's painful...
