Templates for the Walnut Easy Chair
Has anyone tried to download the templates from the FW website for the chair featured on the cover of the December issue? I was able to download and print (at Staples) the PDF for the separate parts, but the only templates for the full chair are provided in specialized formats (.dxf and .svg) that are unusable to me. I was able to convert one to a PDF but it’s only 4 inches across and refuses to be enlarged. Any tips on how to print the full chair template at the proper size would be appreciated.

Is the online magazine PDF different from the printed magazine article?
In the printed magazine did FWW abandon the scaled grid system that allows one to scale their own templates?
The svg file is a Scalable Vector Graphics file. It can be opened by any vector graphic program like Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape (free). There are many others. From there you can export to PDF and print. These programs can be complicated to get the scaling correct. Google will help with that.
The DXF file is for 2D/3D CAD programs.
Thanks, dstevick. I found an app to open the svg and convert it to a pdf. Scaling it is proving difficult, but it should work, even though the line is now 1/4 thick!
Hi alex,
I double checked the PDFS, and I was able to print them no problem from Adobe Acrobat (free download). I did go the extra mile to nest the chair parts for easier printing. You just need to change your print settings when trying to print from your computer: switch Page Sizing and Handling from "size" to "poster" it will scale it to as many individual sheets as needed, and even prints out little crosshairs to line up the pages. I've attached a screenshot of the appropriate settings.
Alternatively, you can send these to a print shop, just making sure to let them know to print to full scale.
Hi,
I spoke to a local print shop about getting full size prints of the PDF's but when I mentioned I had DXF files he recomended a local fabricator who had a CNC router. The fabricator cut out the templates for AU$10 more than printing them in total AU$30 a big help. Providing a sketch up file would have helped.
Also note the artical has a couple of errors, the length of the Back Rail Bending Form is incorrect it needs to be 21 ¾ long to give a Back Rail the correct length. The second error is in the article on how to weave a wooden tile seat on page 76 the article states that the holes in the tiles are drilled a quarter of the tile’s length from each end, however the diagram on page 77 indicates that the holes should be drilled 13/16 from the end of the tile, as this is not a quarter of the tile length the tile holes do not line up. For the holes to align the holes need to be drilled 25/32 from the tile end.
