I apologize for posting this a second time. Tried last week with no results and can’t find the thread.
Is anyone familiar with the Log Tenon Maker that Rockler Tools sells?
It’s a router accessory used for cutting tenons on branches and logs. Currently on closeout sale with a PC router in their latest flier. I’d like to know if it’s worth buying.
Thanks,
oldfred

It's a very old concept, old as routers anyway. Never tried the Rockler vesrion, just my do it yourself version. Works fine. You can also get the tenon makers from Lee Vally or get the deep plug cutter style from places like Grizzly. Flea markets and antique stores often have the tenoner you use with an auger bit. Lot of options available.
Don't confuse something being discontinued as not a functional item. Popularity of an item does not determine if it's the best it could be.
RickL, Thanks.
I have one of the antique 3/4" cutters with a matching pointer I picked up for my bit brace. I get mixed results with it.
This Rockler set uses a set of plastic guides for different sizes, and with the package price, which includes a 960 LR router, it might be a good deal. Don't know.....
I'd be interested to see or at least know more about your do-it-yourself version. I've made them for tenoning dowels, but not logs.
Thanks,
oldfred
If you've made them for dowels just make it bigger for logs. I don't understand what else you need to know. If you've made them for dowels why do you ask if the Rockler is any good. The concept is sound and well proven.
I've made them for dowels by boring a hole in a thick piece of wood and feeding the dowel through the wood into a router bit attached to the other end.
Easy with a round dowel but not an out of round log or branch. The Rockler guides are tapered openings and look like they would allow so much wobble that it might be difficult to ensure a trued tenon.
oldfred,I, too, have been wondering about the wobble factor with out of round branches and logs.
