I’m debating a tenoning jig upgrade from my Delta 34-183. My options are Delta 34-184 and General 05-050. I read the review by Storther Purdy (FW #175) wherein he picked the Delta 184 as best overall. And, his summary review on the General was less than steller. However, I read a review by Tom Caspar in the Jan 2007 #126 (pg33) American Woodworker and Tom sez “this jig ranks with the best”. Too, Tom’s review seems to contradict some of the faults cited by Strother. So, I’m in a quandry. What say you??

I'm going to jump in on this one because we try to make it a policy not to offer tool reviews besides what's been published in the magazine. The results from Strother Purdy's article is all we can speak to. And since we haven't read the AW article it's hard to comment on the author's findings. I'm sorry we can't help you finalize your decision.
I'm curious why you want to upgrade your existing tenoning jig? Are there features on the 34-183 that you aren't happy with. If you have the time, you can post your own rating and review of that product in our Tool Guide here. Your review might be able to help other woodworkers with this same decision.

No real reason for the upgrade other than dialing in the proper distance is a bit finicky - perhaps I never got it set up right in the first place for my left-tilt Jet Exacta. Best I can determine, the "184" addresses this problem and is basically the only difference betwix the two. And, I may fall into the catagory of "tool collector" in lieu of "woodworker". I"m retired and woodworking fills my "free" time and I sell a few things at a WV Co-Op I belong to, along with a few commissions I get along the way. Most all of my profits go into tool upgrades. So, since I read other reviews hailing the Delta 184 (including AW), I just thought I wood get one. Too, I've done quite well in reselling the tools from which I upgrade, either thru local auctions or The Buyers Guide. I thank you for your reply.
That sounds like a good reason to upgrade to me. Let us know how your new purchase works out when you've had some time to test drive it.
