OK. I have a plan to build a boat, but it talks about many dimensions of Mahogony (eg 1″ x 4″ x 24″), and then talks about one length of “Beam Mahogony”. So can anyone help me with the difference between “Mahogony” and “Beam Mahogony”?
Thanks

Alistair, I'm drawing a complete and utter blank... but there's someone here on Knots who has made boats, and we've conversed briefly about my turning to him for help in the future as I look at possible plans myself... but I can't for the life of me remember his name (I've spent the morning finishing a piece... maybe that's the reason -- I'm probably high on fumes).
Anyway, you might get a faster response if you reposted your question with a more specific subject line, such as "Boat Lumber Terminology -- Please clarify." Since there are so many posts each day, many of us just skip over those with generic titles. You'll probably get the attention of boatbuilders, and probably even the guy himself...
... now why can't I remember his nickname? Oh well...

There are quite a few boatbuilding forums out there. Try this Google results page:

Should get you a quick answer.

Alistair,
The beam refers to the beam of the boat - its width at the widest point or the materials that span that point.

This is probably a result of my vague question - thanks for the response.
Unfortunately the piece that refers to Beam Mahogony is not for the beam, it is for the horizontal section of the Transom. Its actual dimensions are 1" x4-1/2" x 54". All of the pieces referred to as beam (eg Deck Beam) simply need Mahogony, hence the confusion.
Thoughts?
I wonder if beam mahogany is also known as pattern mahogany, which is wood with a particuarly straight grain. Is this piece under such tension or pressure that straight grain would be especially important?
