I’m looking to texture raw wood before finishing; to have the late wood above the surface of the early wood. I remember years ago of putting a torch to redwood and then wirebrushing to create texture. Redwood is reasonably fire-resistant, so it worked great. Are there other approaches, e.g. with acid, or ? Any suggestions aappreciated. Thanks all.

The torch and brush technique will work with at least some success on any wood that has a coarse grain and a soft early wood, mainly any of the softwoods. The fire resistance of the wood probably has no bearing on the effect.

Another option would be to sand blast it.

Bead blasting would be better than sand. Glass or plastic beads are more gentle and would make a more controlled blast. I think some even blast with pecan shells. There is an automotive restoration shop around here that advertises these "gentle " methods that do not put heat into large sheet metal panels. Might be a place to look.

a pressure washer can give you an interesting texture on wood, however it tends to create a bit of fuzz on the wood which may or may not be acceptable in your situation.
Thanks guys.
