Thanks Forest Girl – Wood Rack Advice!!
Hey FG, I FINALLY finished the wood storage rack in the new shop..Boy is it sweet!
I purchased 325 bf of QSWO and Cherry and the rack held it all PLUS the wood I already had. This thing is STRONG!
As you’ll see in the attached pictures, I build a large rack on the S.E. wall of my new shop and then a smaller rack above the garage door…to take advantage of what I view as unuseable space.
I basically glued and screwed two 2 X 4s together for each upright and then drilled a hole for the 3/4′ ID pipe on a 15-degree angle. The folks at the Big Evil Orange Box cut the pipe for me at no charge!
Thanks for terrific advice FG!
I’m gonna name my new bandsaw after you…..smile!

I noticed that one of the pipe holes is about 1/16" off-center on the rack!! ha..ha..
Very nice and you now know the great advantage of having one. I was kiddin' about the off-center of course. FG will chastise me for that one. <G>
Enjoy...

Only one was off? And by 1/16th?
I wish!!!
In my heart of hearts, I retroactively realized that if those verticals weren't PERFECTLY aligned, things would sit totally flat.
If doing again, I'd just do TWO uprights...not four.
AND, I'd use a chalk line and drill my verticals AFTER installing the uprights..make a jig that kept the drill bit angle at 15 degrees..
As it is, it'll do...I'll keep it this way until it collapses under 800 bf of White Oak!!

Nice rack. Are the pipes simply placed in the holes?
It'd be easy to get the multiple uprights and their pipes aligned if you do the following. Make all of the wooden uprights absolutely identical in terms of where the holes are drilled. Do this with jigs. Then install one of the uprights temporarily. Install the farthest one, again temporarily. If you need to raise it, put shims underneath to keep it from sliding back down (out of level). Then place the intermediate uprights in place, shimming where appropriate. If they're shimmed correctly, you could then firmly attach all uprights and the pipes would be perfectly in line.

I don't think it will fall anytime soon. I would probably have done the four up-rights also. At least three. I like to go that extra mile in case I might be living on a fault-line and don't know it. ha..ha..
Good work and a nice addition to your set-up...

Wow! This is like being in the headlines, above the fold! Glad that storage idea worked for you, and I'm sure your's is bomb-proof (haven't looked yet, 390+kb takes awhile to download).
Enjoy working all that wood!

PS: Glad to have a bandsaw named in my honor! Also, Kudos to HD. They cut all of mine to length too, very friendly, 15 minutes before closing time on a Saturday night!

"Idle hands..." and all that -- I did my compulsive resizing thing, here they are at 50 and 30 kb.
Very, very cool rack. I might follow suit on that above-the-wall idea. I have a space I've never figured out what to do with.

Aren't you the helpful one? First she teaches me how to build a killer wood-storage rack, THEN she resizes it so everyone can view it!!
Not only am I naming my first bandsaw after you, but also the actual wood rack. Now all of my woodworking friends...maybe even the whole Knots forum will be talking about "Forest Girl's Rack".
No offense intended....I couldn't resist!
In all seriousness, you're very much appreciated. I hope I can offer the same level of helpfulness as you FG!

Why do I sense that ToolDoc and Sarge are just around the corner, doubled over with laughter?! ROFLMAO!!!
PS: There might be the makings of a new blues song in this thread. Who knows?

FG did a nice job of re-sizing the pics, as usual. She can really touch up things with these computers. It's so good, the pipe holes look to be no more that 1/128" off in the touched-up pictures. < G >
You named your BS and "wood-rack" after FG? Looks like Doc and I have a little "catching up to do". I'll have to do some real thinking on this one. ha..ha..
Have a good evening...

Oh, and I just downloaded a plan for a woodrack that used 2x4 pieces attached to my studs (since my walls as yet remain uncovered - I know - if I don't do it soon I won't do it!) but NOW I think I need to do this one - I would guess the wood will load and unload easier on the pipe than it would on wooden supports. BTW - 3/4 pipe - how long did you do the pieces?
Okay, now I may be getting a new lab next year - does that mean I need to name it after FG somehow - if it's a yellow lab I could name her (of course it WILL be a gurl!) Birch, a chocolate could be Mahoghany, and duh, a blackie will have to be Ebonie (female sp there guys!) - surely it will count if I use a tree name - or I guess I could put FG in the name somewhere - something like "Ferrell's Birch Sunshine FG" for her registered name. It's football time in Tennessee! Go Vols!!!!
Rob, I'd suggest that you go with the FG special, of course. That way, if you decide to "do" your walls, you can take it down, and re-install afterwards. I think my pipe was cut in 15" lengths. Wouldn't make it much longer than that due to increased torque (or whatever the exact, precise term is).
I'd be honored to have my initials on those registrations papers! Keep in mind, I try to watch most of those big whoop-de-whoop national dog shows on the Discovery or Animal channel, so I'll be expecting to see my initials on the championship podium!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I'm with you, FG. Use the metal pipe...not wood. My pipes were 16" long...which is too long...I'd be happy with 12" next time.
And, by the way, I'm glad you have the sense of humor you have... I'm somewhat of a feminist male at heart..but couldn't resist the jab!
lp
Larry, did the pipe supports stick out 16"? Mine were cut to 15" and I guess stick out about 12" from the 2x4 edge, which seemed about right.
With my buddies TD and Sarge here to protect me, my sense of humor has grown <g>. And.....they've figured out where The Line is, ha ha.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
FG
Yep, we have figured out where that Line is, and we "tow" it.
Well, back to work on the "Forest Girl Commemorative Edition Junk-Yard Dog Work-Bench". There will only be a few produced, so order now to take advantage of a special "one time offering". Supply is limited, so act fast to make sure you don't miss the opportunity of a lifetime. ha..ha..
