WHAT ARE THEY????
Drafting 101 covered the 3 dimensions; we were shown a rectangular block in slight perspective and length was always from left to right; width was always from front to back and height was always from bottom to top; real simple if you are always rectangular and always face the same direction.
Along comes breadth, depth and thickness and changing perspective; now what??
Mix in subscribers; albeit not too many of us where English is a second or even third language and you have some head scratching (I have deep scars or is that high scars??)
Is there any way articles in FWW can be standardised for LXWXH when describing a piece or a part??? Whole objects such as a desk are pretty straight forward but parts can be confusing………………the depth should not exceed the thickness; assembled..12 inch deep wall cabinets ; wardrobe is 24 inches broad.
Can we all get on the same sheet or at least in the same pew.
Befuddled.

This was recently discussed, and I believe the consensus was that here in the US LWH is normal but another standard is in effect in other places. Since we're definitely an international community, it's going to be tough to be intuitive for everyone.
Thank you John,
I did miss the recent discussion and am still searching for it.
The terminology used came from English, the language of FWW.
A picture is worth a thousand words; especially if it includes dimensions then we dont care what you call the width, breadth or depth.
If you have 100 woodworkers making a coffee table from a description you would probably get 100 different tables.
If you have 100 woodworkers making a coffee table from a set of dimensioned plans you would probably get 50 the same and 50 screw ups.
Perhaps this is how it should be and always will be.

Befuddled,
I'm a cabinetmaker, trained similarly to the old British tradition.
Length is the direction with the grain.
Width is the bigger of the dimensions across the grain.
Thickness is the smaller of the dimensions across the grain.
Depth of a cabinet is front to back
Width is side to side as you face the cabinet.
Usually works for me.
As you said, the hazards of working in an international community are that there are different conventions and nomenclature. - The Antilles must be very pleasant at this time of year.
Cheers,
eddie
Thank you Eddie,
You have further muddied the waters by introducing grain direction as a determinant of LXWXH and here I was prepared to blame the English language; streuth!!
Back to square one; what determines the length of a cube??; not a wooden one.
I realise we are not making jet engines where parts made in Surinam or Shan-gri-lah have to fit together in Seattle with great precision; but can we agree on what to call the 3 dimensions?
Doubt it very much.
Still befuddled.
The wx in the Nederlandse Antillen is indeed very pleasant X 365 (that is the length)
I just read ypur profile, I would like to say: Com ta bai sua ? Ami ta masha bon !
