The VOC laws are kicking into high gear, all oil paints are going away forever. All the major suppliers have stopped producing oil based paint and primer as of Jan 1. I have been told that all the other non compliant products will be off the selves by next Jan.
As a furniture maker and finish carpenter this is going to be a very big problem for me. Without shellac, varnish, polyurethane and rub on oils I cannot properly finish my work.
Water based products are great on walls but for floors, exterior work and fine furniture they are less than satisfactory.
I brought this up over at BT and I wanted to get a response from people from this forum

I'd like to see a reputable report on this one. There are too many applications for oil paints for them to simply disappear.
I first read about the changes in Workshop News last year. I have to go out for an appointment right now, but I'll find the article and paraphrase it when I get back. Things are going to get tough -- it's a state-by-state situation, not federal, if I remember correctly. Sorry I can't get it to you right now.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Thank heavens for the politicians! I suspect we can look forward to the day when we can't sand anymore (wood dust), glue anything (doesn't break down in the environment), nail anything, or screw (heavy metals from the zinc plating). And for all of our health, no more rotating power tools or sharp objects.
Cripes! How did we ever manage to grow old enough to read without all the protection our legislators are providing for us today?
The posting just before you's gives a good reference, thanks.

That's good, because I didn't find the right issue of Workshop News in my filed mags. I think it talked more about clear finishes than paints, though. I'm drop-dead busy today, but if I find it tonight and glean info that isn't in the on-line article, I'll post it here.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I live in Ma where they seem to be one of the states that are moving forward with the VOC requirements. I have talked to several Ben Moore dealers and to the Home Depot paint reps and they all said the same thing. They are only selling oil based paint that they have in stock, no more will be ordered and no more will be delivered.
I agree.. I think it is in the right direction BUT.. SOmetimes needed for.. Well I always did it that way folks!
Cough-cough Hack-hack Weeze-weeze.
HEY! What is this? Air free from poly-carbons? If true, it has to be some liberal plot to ween us off of oil from the mid-east.
Or, it has to be some Right wing plot to prevent us from making bombs from classic-oak polyurethane.
Or worse, its a feminen plot to get even with us for leaving the toilet seat up. To our defense, though, who would be stupid enough to sit down before ... (Don't finish that thought. Must ... bite ... tongue ... instead.) Ouch!
I know. Homeland Security and the EPA have ganged up on us because the effect it has on the ozone layer might stir up those pesky terrorists to start using classic oak polyurethane bombs.
Doesn't this sound like one of those, "If your right eye offends thee, pluck it out." reactions. Wax is an oil product too. Then hot-wax would be banned too! If so, this is gonna cut into my wife's hairy legs. Oh-hh, (sob-sob) the humanity.
Maybe we'll need to get a special license to stain or finish. We might have to take and pass approved staining and finishing classes. The wood police would have to monitor us to make sure we stain in an approved manner. Our wives could vouch for us that we finish quickly.
Another lie in the fabric of the universe we have to remember. But I'll not lie again. I take my time when finishing, making sure all my strokes are in one direction. (Experts tell me this is not only possible, but the preferred way for a smooth and masterful finish.) A master is recognized by his attention to details. The term "Woody" has come to mean we want another chance to finish. It is much like the slang of the 80's when someones said they had a "Basketball Jones" This is a new age and we all have a "Woody" when we see a job that needs doing right.
How do we explain THAT to the government man (think G-man) who sneeks into our woodworking shed late at night and prys open containers with that tattle-tale smell. We can't explain it, nor should we have to explain. He's never earned the nickname, "Woody". He needs to know my "Woody" will not go gently into the night.
All this time we've been worried that the future would turn out to be like George Orwell's "1984", when we shoulda been worried that it would turn out like Woody Allen's "Sleeper".

PS: A little long-winded, but I got there. Why can't I spell cynicisium?
Thou shalt not post stoned, surferdude!
Too many oil fumes, dude!
Your post was eloquent, elegant and to the point. Well done!
Does this mean that in a year or so ,we won't be getting spam e-mail trying to sell us viagra, #### enlargements, stock tips, rolex watches,.... and God knows what else all arriving from the far east. No ! We will get offers of paint ,varnish, shellac, and all sorts of other horrible chemical based compounds.
Yes spam now has found its true function.

I just went on EPA website and typed in VOC on there search and could not find any thing on when this is all supposed to happen
Mark
woodman54,
I think we're supposed to do something with 'switch grass' to solve the problem...??
I just did a web search and couldn't turn up anything hinting at the ban described in the initial posting, does anyone know the facts?
John W.
It's not an outright ban on oil based finishes, it's a lowering in the allowed VOCs for certain product types and some limits on container sizes.http://www.oldhousejournal.com/magazine/2006/feb/paint-regs.shtml-Toby
