i noticed that general has introduced a new line of saws, the 50-220 which appears to be a cabinet saw. they sell from about $800 to $900 depending on the fence. i assume that this line is imported, not built in canada. does anyone have any experience with this model, it looks like a lot of bang for the buck.

I think its the Feb/05 issue of Workbench magazine that has a comparison of four new hybrid saws. They give the nod to the General International but do suggest upgrading the the T-square fence. Basically its an enclosed contractor saw but it gives you a choice of hooking up to a 2 1/2 inch shop vac or a 4 inch dust collector. Being the General International it will be off shore manufactured, not Canadian made. The T square fence is made in Canada. FYI: I have the GI contractor saw and am completely happy with it. Apparently, General was one of the first companies to have their own quality control reps over there to make sure the stuff coming off the line met their specs. Others have followed by now.

When I bought my GI contractor saw nearly two years ago, they had a model 50-200 that looked very similar to the 50-220....2hp hybrid, enclosed base, beefed up contractror style trunnions, Biese fence. It was more like $1000 then. What's different about the 50-220? It looks like a nice alternative to the other hybrids that have less substantial fences and 3/4 enclosures.

Don't know. Sent General an e-mail asking the question. See what I get back.
