Went to Pittsburgh this weekend, visited family, then drove over to McDonald and picked up the 12″ jointer. I was able to look it over closely and run some material. SWEEEEET!!!! Just sits there and purs like a kitten, no vibration. Takes about 45 to 60 seconds to stop, I didn’t time it. It took four of us to move it off the trailor, through a 48″ door, and over to its new home in my shop. Good thing I had two 5x5x120″ cherry posts to use as a ramp. Getting it off the pallet I made, per Northfield specs, was somewhat of a challenge but we did it without dropping or even jarring this babe. My automotive floor jack paid for itself this morning.
Condition of this 38 year old beast? Looks to have had a very easy life. Comparible to maybe 10 years of real use.
Speaking of Pittsburgh, do any of you live around there? Have you heard of the “In The Saddle Band”? www.inthesaddleband.com The bass/keyboard player, Pat, is my brother. The tall, pretty blonde, lead singer, is my sister-in-law. We got to see them perform Friday night at McGoo’s out on the North end. Fun time!!
Oh, and one other thing, Pittsburgh has a real jewel of a store call Woodcrafter’s Supply. Just a few blocks down from McGoo’s. Great selection of hand tools to machinery, veneer to hardwood boards, books, and a huge selection of cabinet hardware. A very nice brunett, I didn’t get her name, tried to help me pick out handles and escutcheons but didn’t have the right style for the blanket chest I’m building. This was my second visit to this store but not my last. Ken

Ken,
Congrats on your new jointer! The old machines are great, aren't they. Did you end up with the medium (6' bed)or heavy duty(8' bed)model? I'm still looking .. located a medium duty 12" Northfield not too far from me. I'm going to give it a serious look. If I don't find a good used one soon, I'll probably buy the S.A.C.

This is the 8' heavy duty unit. Look for an e-mail from me. Ken
Ken,
How much did your new, old Northfield jointer cost you? I know of one in my area, and may make an offer. They are smooth-running machines. The one I am looking at is three phase, too, FWIW. Thanks.

I paid $3,500.00 for my machine. I got lucky and found a real creampuff. It came out of a vo-tech school. Even though it's 38 years old it doesn't appear to have more than maybe 10 years of actual use. Also appears to have been well cared for. If you have not already spoken to Jeff at Northfield you should. Before I agreed to send a deposit I had family/friends in the area check out the jointer first, taking suggestions from Jeff. On top of this price I also had to transport the machine from the Pittsburgh area to Georgetown, KY, hotel stays, gas, etc. Plus, my static converter costs $195.00 plus tax/shipping. Good luck in your shopping. Ken
To think
I passed up a completly rebuilt unit 2 years ago for $1500
Only 1/2 hr from my place.
I still kick myself.
Jeff
Thanks, Ken. That is what I needed to know. The school that owns it wants to replace it with what I consider an inferior quality new machine. Hope yours serves you well for a long time.

I'm from the Burgh, and I have a few friends from McDonald. What school did you find the jointer? Never heard of the band. Hope you enjoyed your stay!
The fellow I bought it from aquired it from a school. I didn't get the name or location.

Nice web site for the band! Continued success to your brother, sister-in-law and the rest of the band. Around 20 years ago, here in Chicago, there was a band called The Jump In The Saddle Band. That had a hit song called The Curly Shuffle. When I saw the URL for the web site, I thought that's who it was!

Long live the memory of the Thirsty Whale!
I'll pass this message on to Pat. He'll like it.
