On my ‘good’ bench I want to add a ‘Tail Vice’ (I think that is what they are called) See below for what I mean… Picture is worth 1,000,000 words…
http://www.jeffgreefwoodworking.com/pnc/ShopProj/woodvice/index.html
I think it is the same as on Tage Frid’s bench..
I want to make it like a pattern makers vice with wooden screws..
I want to use two screws and I have made some wooden ‘balls’ that are threaded.. Balls I have made are from some purpleheart scraps I had.. Yes, I turned them on my L’Cheapo Mini lather.. Geeee I think I smoked the motor…
Anyway,, Two questions…
First question:
I made two wooden screws out of rock maple that are 1 inch in diameter.. OK? or need to be heavier?
Second and last question:
Any Ideas on how to make a ‘good wooden socket’ with hand tools???
(NOTE: I have metal working tools I could use BUT I want to use my woodworking tools).. Not sure why though!
I would assume ya’ start with a square block.. Saw it in half but what from there? My attempts on my junk lathe proved to be ‘Less than successful’…
Open for suggestions.. Thanks in advance

Dang!
Judging by the thin handle on that vice your two by 1" diameter screw rods are plenty strong enough.
Will what sockets are you talking about??
Personally I have never hankered after that kind of vice. I have always got along fine with my trusty engineers vice with soft jaws as required-no doubt the cognoscenti will be rolling on the floor at this revelation but I am not noted for being orthodox...When I really need to put the squeezes on something I just whip out a heavy Record Tee bar sash clamp or two.
But I would like the proper original pattern makers vice very much.
First of all NOT MY VICE! Just a PIC of what I sort of want to do...
I stolds' it from the web!I just have a cast iron vice that sort of goes anyway ya wantt hat I like ALOT... Just trying to think of a way to do it in WOOD!Dang... Maybe Cast Iron is best?what sockets are you talking about??...
Sort of as in ball and socket so the vice face can go with the 'stick' shape...EDIT:: have never hankered after that kind of vice.. Me either till I got a pattern maker vice...

Will,
Just a thought...buy an old wood clamp and cut up to achieve the end you desire. With a little glue and ingenuity, you could even turn a socket around the female threads. If all fails you're probably out about $5-10 bucks.
An alternative for a quasi tail vise would be two veneer screws holding a thick slab of maple on the end of the workbench....
DANG!!! buy an old wood clamp and cut up to achieve the end you desire..Geeee I got several I hardly ever use! I LOVE your Idea.. Geeee but the threads not 'narlly' 1 inch.. WEll.. I'll think on it a bit!
Will, kinda expensive, think you already know about this guy anyway..

GeeeeeeeI saw a video from that woodworker what had Bandages on his fingers... I just loved that show.. Not on these days,,,, GeeeI remember on TV show.. On OAK was this dark stain sort of running down the wood... He said it was his BLOOD! I can relate to that!

Somewhere in my readings I remember reading someone saying to make your vise screw at least 1.5 inches in dia. I can look for the reference if you need it but I think it was Roy Underhill.
I was on the road to make my own vise but got cut short because I didn't have a source for the cutter for the screwbox. Since I've found that Woodcraft has screwboxes under "woodthreading kits" http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?DeptID=2147&FamilyID=792
This project is still on the shelf so someday...
Goodluck
