"GreenWood helped bring woodturning skills and bicycle-powered lathes into Honduras, sparking the creation of some 600 mallets that will be sold by Lee Valley. It’s just one of the efforts by this nonprofit, which is dedicated to forest stewardship and sustainable development."
I would respectfully disagree that this project and subsequent article was a failure of any kind. In fact, I felt so strongly about the positive story that I purchased two of the mallets. Teaching people in, what might be considered, a third world country with no electricity and probably no hope for a self supporting lifestyle that they can make a difference is admirable.
The GreenWood organization should be applauded and supported.
It was a wonderful article about an excellent program and organization.
And listen to the podcast as well. It was also very interesting.
I can only echo the sentiments expressed by jkatzowitz. There are so many positive aspects to this story, in my opinion. Over the years I have also read many stories in Fine Woodworking of people who I believe would qualify as a “more local” craftsperson. This is just one of the many reasons I continue to subscribe.
I read the article and immediately logged into Lee Valley and bought the 3 piece set. Adding value to the wood closer to the forest is my take away....local stewards.
where on the Lee Valey site? I could not find them.
They sold out months ago. They're working on restocking right now.
I just tried the link from the FWW article about the mallets and it said "page not found" so I guess they are out of stock at Lee Valley. Bummer.
And...Boom goes the dynamite.
My girl is going to wonder why the Peloton I got her for christmas is down in the shop, and attached to a lathe. Win-win I say. Hell, she wanted to spend more time together...
