We dont' get a whole lot of color generally in the Puget Sound, but this year it's coming real, real late. It's still very warm here, despite the rain storms, and the big-leaf maples are just starting to change and drop their leaves. Spiders are busy, but not as much so as usual. The prettiest color I see are the blueberry bushes, which turn a bright deep red in the fall, quite striking!
And, it's not just the leaves that are falling -- so are the trees! We've had two pretty big wind storms in the last few weeks -- see this thread. I had a nice visit with the telephone field guy this morning about the last couple of alders that fell on our big feeder line.

HI forest girl , those trees falling down, are they a blessing or a curse, free wood
for fire or cabinets? I hope the damage was small, and no one hurt.
take care mark
No one hurt, fortunately. Definitely a blessing -- they're providing me with a great amount of firewood, but since the trees that fell have been dead for awhile, they're not usable for lumber. I'm not complaining though -- with firewood at $165/cord these days, free is really great! Enables me to warm the shop and actually work during the wintertime. Heaven knows I haven't been in the shop while the weather's been good -- too much fun being outside doing those yard chores, LOL!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Woodshaver,
The color is a bit spotty still around the Boston area, took a short ride yesterday through Lexington, Concord, Westford and up into So. New Hampshire..as you move north over a 30-40 mile stretch it probably goes from 30% to 50% color. Actually, I have to be more careful with the 30% color than with the 50% or higher....I'll be driving along enjoying everything and then....bam ! you turn a corner and there before you is one of those floresent type trees..that appears to be pluged in to electricity also....it can and has taken my breath away ....the intensity of the color is impossible to describe..
I bumped into a guy from TX on Friday over at Woodcraft...he does Incra demos at all the Woodcraft stores across the country. He was on the schedule in Woburn, MA for yesterday and then he was heading up to Bar Harbor, ME. before heading back to Dallas with his wife. This was his first time in NE...he just kept shaking his head in disbelief over the color. Of course, I rattled off instructions on how he just had to stop at LN in Warren, ME on the way up to BH...there is a good chance that if he drives up the coast along 1A he'll be okay...but if he takes a left anyplace and then heads over to the White Mountains in NH after seeing the coast...he's a gonner...TX will never see him again...
BG where/ what is LN in warren maine?
I live in edgecomb me, am I missing something?
jake,
LN = Lie Nielson..the plane makers...I've been threatening to run up there and visit the factory/showroom. I haven't because I'm afraid I'll spend money on things I don't need. ...waiting for them to announce their new line of chisels..
Your down near Booth Bay?...nice area...

Are they dying? Is it a blight? Hmmm, That never happens in SoCal. Fronds normally fall off one at time.John O'Connell - JKO Handcrafted Woodworking

John,
I kinda figured this would be one of the best falls ever....we had a rather wet summer...not too hot...trees are extra full with leaves this year...but so far it appears not much is happening in the immediate vicinity... On the evening news they give the best spots throughout New England. Very few leaves have turned yet, let alone fallen....usually by Nov. 16 the trees are bare.
I have a strong suspicion it's all the visitors fault. They come up here and respond to the slightest bit of color with Ooh's and Ahh's...heating up the air and the trees think it's still summer...
The Fall colors here in PA have Peaked & are all but petered out lots of rain & heavy winds have taken there toll on the leaves.. good now those pesty tourists will leave..<G>

About the only color change we get here in Florida is when the green leaves come out in the spring. I keep hearing about going north to see the leaves change, but haven't been able to make that trip yet. All this talk just makes me want to go, all the more. I'm a warm weather guy, get cold when it's below 60. But one of these days.........
I'm in Kensha county (very southeast part of Wis.) The leaves wint from green to shades of yellow to brown, and are now falling. We have had better color in other years. This still is the best time of the year. Enjoy the fall.

Colors here are still green. Still mowing the lawn once a week. High today to be around 80 degrees. Am looking forward to the annual influx of geese next month, though. The hummers have already past through on their journey across the Gulf of Mexico. Hard for me to understand how such a little critter can fly so far, non-stop!

I also live in NE Pa. We are suppose to get a hint of the white stuff on Wed. Can't wait! The leaves here are all but gone. Due to the wind storm we got last week.
Love the little hummers! Good things come in small packages, eh?
Oh, BTW, they flyin' past to get well out in front of those geese! Tiny hummers wouldn't stand a chance, LOL.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
We also see Bald Eagles coming south with the geese. Geese are one of their favorite foods. Each year we're seeing more eagles.
A few years ago I walked through a flock of snow geese that must have been 100,000 strong. The noise was deafening. They would clear out a circle maybe 50' diameter in front of me as I walked. It was in a rice field that had just been harvested and the geese were picking up the scraps. Found a few splatters on the pickup when I got back to it.

The colors are just starting in SW Tennessee where I am - but the eastern side in the Mountains is probably in full swing around the Knoxville area. I have a pecan tree in the front yard and one in the back and they pretty much shed a few leaves (not much color) over a couple of weeks and then one day I'll get up and "see" FALL - it'll start in the morning and they'll be bare by evening - which is nice 'cause I only have to clean the gutters once!. Maples, sweetgums around here are coloring up but it's pretty slow. I had so many pecans from these two trees last year (over 200 pounds at least) that I finally ended up burning the last ones on the ground along with some leaves - I had already had people from work, church, other friends come out and pick up all they wanted - you could rake them up in piles and sit down on the ground with a 5 gallon bucket and fill it in 10 minutes easy. This year I'll be lucky to have 5 pounds - it really goes in cycles - but I still have some in the freezer from last year. Yes, it's comfy right now - we're actually having record-setting 80s this week - but I'm more of a summer girl - I NEVER complain about the heat and believe me, it's humid around here. BUT I HATE TO BE COLD! I always tell people I'll never move any further north than I already am.

next comes that four letter word,
SNOW!
no not yet!!! that reminds me I need a new snow shovel, and ice scaper.
What I need is a ticket to Southern Calif. I've endured that stuff for 55 years and hate and dread winter..
Can you imagine there are some fools here who look forward to winter so they can go ice fishiing?
Now there is a sport.. walk out to the middle of the lake and cut a hole in the ice. Then huddle around waiting untill some fish wanders by and takes a bite out of your bait.. (bait that you pay more for than the fish is worth, not to mention the licence and other equipment required)
If, I repeat IF! you should happen to catch a fish all you need to do is pull it out and it quickly freezes to death on the ice.. but.... you need to pull your gloves off in order to unhook it so you can continue this exciting sport..
Next time we'll discuss the peacefull quiet of snowmobles at two in the morning.....
SNOW !!!! Yeah bring it on IM ready...I love when it snow & snows & snows..I see $$$$ maga Dollar signs..LMAO.. were ready for it new tractor, rebuilt loader & 4 trucks with plows & a skid loader..wooohooo.. Lots of overtime means more new Tools..
