This is a message for John White…..
I found your “thinking outside the box” workbench made of clamping fixtures and black pipe real cool, cost effective, and functional. I saw your bench in Lon Schleining’s “the workbench:. I wish to build one. Do you have the plans available?
I looked at the photographs of the bench and can figure out how everything works, except for the front vise (maybe I am not seeing the mechanism….).
Please advise.

Plans from Taunton press aren't available but there has been a lot of discussion about the bench on this site and other woodworking sites over the years. I believe that some people have posted plans and cutting lists. Go to the search function for this site and search for the "newfangled workbench" you should get lots of resources and discussions about the bench.
The front vise is made from two pipe clamps that slide into holes drilled into the front and rear aprons. The pipes are locked in place by pins inserted through holes in the pipes where they go through the well in the middle of the bench. The front jaw of the vise is a board with two cutouts that slip over the pipes. The pipes that create the vise can be spaced close together or far apart so you will need to make a few different front jaws if you want a range of sizes.
Hope this helps.
