I’m trying to mount the lid to the jewelry box via a pair of hinges- I measured, marked, drilled, and am off a little- Just a LITTLE bit, but it looks awful- Maybe it’s my fat fingers or old eyes or the fact I could put the hinges, let alone the screws, in my eye and not feel them (almost)- There must be a proper way to approach this deal- Does anybody know? Thanks for any help-

Sorry I got the above in the wrong forum- Should have been in General Discussion- But any ideas will be appreciated-
Mounting small hinges on small boxes is a real challenge. I’ve tried a bunch of methods but the one that works best for me comes from a tip I read in Fine Woodworking some years ago. Cut your mortises in the top and bottom of the box and screw the hinge to the bottom. Make a spacer out of cardstock, veneer, or what ever is handy that is of a thickness such that when put between the leaves of the hinges when they are closed, the spacer keeps them parallel. Put your spacers between the hinge leaves and place a small drop of super glue or epoxy glue on the upper surface of the hinges and place the top of the box on the bottom carefully aligning them. When the glue dries, gently open the box, drill pilot holes for the screws into the box top, and screw the hinges in permanently.
hope this helps
Jerry- What a deal- "Why didn't I think of that?"- That's a great idea, particularly in view of my own idea (or lack thereof) and the mess I've been making- Thanks a lot- I owe ya! Dave
That worked picture perfect- Thanks again- Dave
I must be slow, because I've read this twice and I still don't "get" it. Could you post a picture? In my mind, I have the hinge oriented vertically. Perhaps you have it horizontally? Thanks,
MarkMeasure it with a micrometer, mark it with chalk, cut it with an ax.

Yes, my hinges are oriented horizontally. This description is to mount a box lid. If I am mounting a door I make it slightly oversized and hand plane it to size. Sorry for the confusion.
Dave,
I don't know all the answers as to the 'how to', but I can tell you I don't start without toothpicks, wax candle, vic pix of proper size and substitute screws for the pretty brass ones.
Depending on the box you may be able to run the box (lid and all) across the jointer to flush it up.
This is a very detailed description, by a master at small boxes: http://www.woodworking.org/Exchange/Forum2/HTML/021132.html
It's every bit of that- Thanks Alan- Much appreciated- Dave
