I have recently acquired an older SCM S50N thickness planer (20″ width). I have never seen the machine running, and apparently there is a problem with the feed mechanism. Are any of you familiar with this machine and any problems with it?
The way the planer works, there are two V belts that drive the cutterhead. The two speed transmission seems like a planetary gear system housed inside of a large (12″ diameter X 2″ thick) disc. This disc is driven by friction against the tops of the V belts. I was told the problem is that these belts slip off to the side when this machine is running. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there an easy solution to the problem?

Not at all familar with your machine but but maybe the distributor may be of help. http://www.cooperhorton.com/profile.html
Have tried calling the techs at SCM? I worked on theirs and many other brands and when I'm stuck I call the people who put out the product as they know it best. SCM made a lot of good machines over the years and I'm sure it's fixable. I'm not exactly sure of that particular model and wish you posted a picture because it maybe similar to something else I worked on. Possibly a new belt is in order or typically a crown on the pulley helps keep the belt centered and maybe it's worn. I'vee recrowned them with a simple thing as a few strips of tape. Probably an easy fix if one could be there and had the experience with such matters.

I will give the tech's at SCM a call and see if they can give me some adivce. I just hope that advice isn't to buy new parts, cause I'll bet they won't be cheap. I'll also talk to Cooper and Horton and see if they can help out.
As far as crowning the pully, because the friction from the V belts is tangent to the surface of the disc, I think it would have to be a reverse crown. I don't know if that would work. I was thinking of machining a couple rings that could be mounted on either side of the disc, to act as a lip, but space is really tight in there, and I don't know how I'd get everything in there. Anyways, here's a picture of the machine. The only visible difference is mine is a yellow/gold color.
